I'm thinking about going back to school but can't consistently commit to a class schedule, so the University of Phoenix seems like my only logical choice. Has anyone here entered these programs? What (if anything) have you heard? BTW I just completed a show that was conceived through a thread that was started here. Turns out it may end up being a pretty big thing! So once again I give props to the site that takes time to be honest with struggling artists and their concepts, and Jeff the most amazing webmaster in the world. Article
Wow, congratulations! Great concept for a show. Did that really come from a thread here?!? The problem with the University of Phoenix is that it doesn't get a lot of respect from employers. Not sure exactly what kind of degree you're looking for or what you plan to do with it; that could make a difference.
I wanted to look into University of Phoenix as well. I'd like to complete my degree so that I could go be a teacher at some point if I ever wanted to. I never found out if a bachelors from there was good enough or not.
AB- An alternative to UoP is Capella University. I have a friend who just graduated. As Isabella said earlier, it doesn't garner too much respect from employers. Then again, if it's for personal enrichment, who cares. http://www.capella.edu/
My brother got his MBA from UoPh. From what I understand its one of the more expensive MBA programs out there, and that they only accept people who are currently working. It was by no means an easy way to get an MBA, mostly working with groups over IM and writing papers.
I started a thread some time ago about the "N" word and while building that bit, I came up with this concept. Not trying to get a job, I just want to know a little more about business as I prepare for my future after comedy.
If it's an MBA you're considering, Portland State University has a new eMBA program where you can do almost everything online. You have to show up for 3 weekend sessions per year, so you;d have to travel a little, but it looks like its around $21k for the whole course, so that's not so bad. PSU has a growing reputation regionally, and would certianly look better than Phoenix or any of the other strictly online schools. Here's a link: http://www.emba.pdx.edu/ I live only a couple of miles from the downtown campus and I'm considering doing it myself.
This probably doesn't say anything about the University of Phoenix, but the school got some nice publicity with Shaq recently receiving his MBA from there. http://msnbc.msn.com/id/8357843/
That's a really good concept, Another Brother. I never understood why Will Smith would get railed constantly for not using swear words in his lyrics or making 100 million dollar movies that don't have street cred to them. Or how Harry Belafonte would call for Powell to give up his race card because of their position in the administration... I've heard that U Phoenix is a little more challenging than some business schools since they take their accreditation seriously.
AB, I am over 3/4 through an MBA by correspondence. For someone who travels a lot, it is the only way to go. It takes self discipline, but it is better than missing lots of lectures when you are on the road. The other big downside is that you don't get any benefit from meeting/mixing with peers. Networking should not be underestimated. Since I am doing mine from a school in Australia, I cannot offer much in the way of recommendations for US schools. If you are just trying to increase your business knowledge, maybe you could consider doing some shorter training - like a few weeks intensive training. ThHey give you a certificate or diploma, and owuld probably benefit YOU as much as a fully fledged MBA.
