Man, I should have read this thing gradually rather than trying to read it all at once. I got bored and didn't really read the last 35 posts. I'll have to try again.

One thing VOR: Christians, Christians, Christians. *whew*... time for some coffee.

outlaw, a friend of mine was one of the producers for "God's Army" so don't give it any flack! [IMG]

Traj, as someone that's sometimes intolerant, I agree with you. I think outlaw is correct, though, that oftentimes alot of us push back on things that we had shoved down our collective throats. My mother was(is?) a very intolerant Christian. To make matters worse, I did not really know who I was as a child b/c I felt like the little bad kid (at the card table of course) that would never be as great as a man as my grandfather. My grandfather had an incredible relationship with his GOD and I was simply crushed that I could not bridge this gap... I could not get closer to my grandpa and share this experience (my dad was an alchy so my grandpa was a father figure of sorts).

I do have to ask the question though: when are you offended? Are there examples in this thread in which someone disagreed with you causing offense (I should take this into another thread b/c 'being offended' is very interesting to me)?

The scripture passage--(2 Corinthians 2:15,16) says...

(15)For we (believers in Christ) are to God the aroma of christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. (16) To the one (unsaved) we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life.

This passage candidly explains why non-believers are "intolerant" of christians but will rarely bash a hindu, buddhist, or jewish person (similar to the earlier post by traj). Christianity is offensive if you don't believe because to deny Christ is to choose eternity away from him. Christians are "offensive" because they are convicting to non-believers. Deep in our hearts there is something that pulls us towards Christ (Rev 3:20, Romans 1:20, 2:4b) but many of us push that away (including myself for most of my life).

I pray that some of us will re-evaluate what life is all about and realize that there is more to life than work, sports, etc. God loves us no matter our past or present.

I thought about this too Mobes. Everyone in my office pretty much believes in God (85% Catholic) and just about everyone I run into believes in God. But here on the BBS, very few people claim to be Christian.

Im not asking for more Christian support, but its just sad that all these 'so called' Christians are too ashamed, too lazy, or too something to put their thought here.

I hate to admit it, but I am intolerant of conservative Christians; Baptists and the Church of Christ in particular. If I had more personal experience with Mormons, they would fall into this category too.

I went to a military boarding school that was also associated with the Baptist church (trying to get the Army and the Baptists to do anything productive is just asking for trouble). I then attended a Baptist university in west Texas, which further fueled my contempt.

I know everyone might ask, "Well, if you hate Baptists so much, why did you go to Baptist schools?" For high school, I didn't really have much of a problem until I went there and I was surrounded by it. As for college, I wanted a smaller university, and the school band there was awesome, plus they gave me the most money. And I don't hate individual Baptists, just the institution of conservative Christianity.

Some of my best friends were Baptists, and they hated the Baptist institution just as much as me. I couldn't begin to count how many people I had "praying for me" just because I wanted to go to the clubs, bars, or a party and have a few beers. I certainly was not the only one who had a social life outside of the church. I am not a Christian, and there were many non-Christians there, as well as non-Baptists, and what I call "tolerant" Christians. Tolerant Christians are the "cool" Christians, for lack of a better term, meaning they didn't force their beliefs upon others.

My problem lies more in the institution of Christianity itself. IMO, the institution is what is intolerant. Some examples from my college days:

    • A church across the street from campus had a service on the same nights when the local clubs had "College Night" with the accompanying drink specials, etc. When the service let out, participants were encouraged to go hang outside the local clubs, praying for all of us sinners on the inside, singing hymns, passing out leaflets on why we were all going to hell for drinking and dancing, and just being a general nuisance. They were there just about every college night, and on Saturday nights as well. Finally the clubs and bars in town put out restraining orders to keep them a certain distance from the doors.

    • At the Church of Christ university, the deans and other school officials were known to go out to the clubs and look for their school's parking permit stickers on cars in the parking lots of the bars and clubs. The students whose permit numbers they had taken down would get into a good deal of trouble with the university. I had friends there who would call me for a ride to prevent this from happening.

In high school, I had to listen to all kinds of crap about how I was going to hell because I hadn't been "saved." In college, it was more of the same, though it was somewhat better because we were in college and had more freedom as adults, rather than high school students. What bothered me the most was the level of hypocrisy among Christians. I would see someone lead a service, preaching the evils of this or that, and then I would see the same people drunk at a party, or smoking a joint, or whatever. These people were as fake as fake can get. They couldn't even be true to themselves, let alone to the doctrine they were trying to preach.

I have a problem with conservative religions. Christianity and Islam are not, according to their respective rule-books tolerant religions. There are many tolerant people within those religions (thank whichever god), but the religion in itself is not tolerant. You won't see many people bashing Buddhists or Taoists, etc because one of the primary teachings of those religions is tolerance. Buddhists or Taoists aren't going to go out and bug the crap out of anyone and everyone who doesn't think the way they do.

actually i was quite surprised by the production values put into the film. i don't mean special effects but the cinematography was very clean and professional. maybe i was just expecting a lower B-movie quality presentation.

the acting was decent and parts of the story were actually entertaining (like I said, better than Gladiator!) but the ending just mutated into cheesiness and preachiness.

And tell your friend to hire some cuter actors next time! [IMG]

I am a Muslim and I HATE it when Christians give me their little stuff on Jesus or the Bible or whatever. I mean what the F#CK? Am I giving them anything on Mohammed or the Quran?

Now dont get me wrong. I dont hate any Chrisitans (well maybe a few [IMG] ). I have respect for all of the religions. But I absolutely cant stand it when people of different religions try to give me something. I have never seen a Jew, Hindu or Muslim passing out anything. Jeff is right. I think SOME Christians want to belong to the high annoyance category.

I am going to print out some stuff on Islam, and the next Christian to give me something is going to have to recieve something. Now that would be funny!

Christian - "Here is how the Lord can save you my child".

R0ckets03 - "Well here is some stuff on how Mohammed will prevent you from eternal damnation!" LOL [IMG]

I dont why I think that is funny. But I am going to try it [IMG]

"I think the important thing to remember is that if you really believe what you believe is true then you HAVE to tell the world.?

I really dig the most of the Ten Commandments, "The Golden Rule", most of Christian philosophy.

I am irritated by evangelism directed at me. I am aware of the Christian religion and I've decided against it.

Do Christian enjoy members of other religions trying to convert them? I believe in Jamology. I believe anyone who is not a Jammist is damned to hell forever. I really believe in this religion and I HAVE to tell the world.

Mobes, will you be tolerant of me when I knock on your door and give me spiel about Jamology? Will you listen patiently? Will you not show the slightest twinge of irritation?

What if I knock on your door twice a week for 6 months? Still tolerant? Still listening patiently?

Remember, you are not a Jammist. So you are damned to Hell. It is my duty as a jammist to convert you to Jamology.

Lynus, there have been many times that we have been on the opposite side of a position, but I just want you to know that I have always respected your beliefs. I wish that you would post more.

Who can forget the thread about the Confederate Flag in S. Carolina? That was a debate I really enjoyed.

I rarely post at cc.net but this thread struck a nerve because of the lack of pro-Christ posts.

I think the important thing to remember is that if you really believe what you believe is true then you HAVE to tell the world. As a believer in Christ, I feel like I have the cure to cancer and I want to at least give every person the chance to accept this cure for death.
