I have been a NBA basketball fan for a long time now. Throughout the years, I've heard many stories of athletic players with attitude problems and questionable work-ethic gets overpaid millions of dollars based on their "potential". Such things have become a norm of the NBA today that you expect players like Stromile Swift to get paid $10 millions a year for six years or something along that line.

However, for this guy to sign for the MLE for 5 years with us despite the high market value for him and the fact that he came out and said how important money is to him, is nothing short of miraculous. CD the GM, JVG the coach and T-Mac the team leader have done a tremendous job in getting this guy here with that price. I heard rumors of T-Mac inviting Swift to dinner and lobbyed extensively for him to come here. This is a showing of great leadership and sales ability. I went all over the internet last night and saw other teams' fans (especially the Lakers fans) cried all over their board over how they couldn't do it and we did it.

CD, JVG and T-Mac deserve all the credit of the world for making this deal happen. Will Swift work out and become a vital piece of a championship run? Maybe and maybe not. I certainly hope so. However, making this move proves the ability of our management team and team leaders. Trust me, not every team can make this kind of deal happen. And the Rockets did.

I know what you mean, when I heard the news I was shocked because I was expecting to be let down by Swift, nice to know his head is in the right place

I believe or it's been proven now, that the Potential to play with Tracy and yao is worth more then a Few extra millon bucks.

Yeah taking less money to win is great but I'm sure hes coming cuz hes close to home for one, no income tax two, and he probably has given the assurance that he'll start.

Other than that maybe noone really offered him more than the MLE?

Nice post - Props to Swift as well, if his play matches his character than he will be an important piece for the Rox. Swift had plenty of time to wait and see if better offers would appear but give him credit for forgoing the opportunity to make more money to play for the Rox.

I still have a bit of skepticism about his intentions and I wonder if it is a possibility that he signs a shorter deal than 5 years with the intent that if has two or three outstanding years with the Rox, he then opts out and goes for the gold then.

From what I've read, Swift's decision came after SAR agreed to sign with NJ. I do give Swift and CD some credit for their contributions in getting a deal done, but SAR essentially set market value when he took NJ's deal. Frankly, there has been no media report that Swift was ever offered more than what NJ was preparing to offer him, and they never did offer it to him.

I'm very, very happy about this, but it's not like Swift had a Simmons-type deal on the table that he walked away from. We lucked out in that we happened to be interested in Swift in a year when no team with caproom happened to be that interested in him.

I think Danny Ferry with Cleveland has a better chance of being GM of the year if Cleveland makes some noise in the playoffs.

I'm not disagreeing that the signing is good but I have to completely disagree on your assessment that he had high market value. He simply did not have high market value. If he would have had that value he would have taken a much better deal. I know we are happy but lets not start the lovefest yet.

Anybody can sign free agents when they have a tonload of money to spend. The great GMs are the ones who get impact players when their cap situation is not the best.
San Antonio-Horry, Ginobili, S Kerr etc
    Houston-T-Mac, Swift
    Miami--Shaq

Same situation with Milwuakee. The new GM fell on some money and he's spending like crazy. Within two years you'll see them trying to get rid of Simmons, Gadzuric. Michael Redd is a really good player, but he's way overpaid. Fans there are happy right now, but every contract they have signed so far (including the number 1 pick) will not pan out. They are at the cap right now with a bunch of mediocre players. They don't have one true star

Again, I agree. It's easy to get excited about the team we love, but let's stay level headed. It was said on 610 this morning so appropriately...we've heard this "potential" word many many times. It has worked out sometimes, and so many other times, not so great in the Rockets organization.

I really liked how they drew a comparision saying, maybe Head can come in and make an impact like Cassell did...we can only hope!

Agreed. The spin on this signing up here in Dallas is understandably different. Mostly it's just being reported and nothing more. Now some folks are wondering why the Mavericks didn't make a move for Swift. Norm Hitzges really likes the signing and said so on his radio show - going as far as to say that this is a perfect fit for the Rockets. Now I did hear the Sportsradio610 morning show guy state that the major reason Swift was available for MLE level money was due to him being more potential than proven (to paraphrase) the inference here being that if Swift had shown more while at Memphis, then he would have commanded more money and interest in the free agent market and would have not been available for just MLE level money.

As for myself, I'll be most curious to see how he turns out and how he meshes with T-Mac & Yao.

And how did we end up with such limited cap space? Many claim Rudy was in charge of personnel decisions and CD handled contract negotiations.

SAR is just as good (if not better) and NJ signed him for the same amount we paid Swift. A 5th year player with "upside" has obvious question marks.

Given that, this is a good pick up that can be a potentially great pick up. Let's wait to see how it all plays out.
