I think in lots of ways this would make a lot of sense. Portland is going to lose DS for nothing if they don't cooperate with someone. Portland gets a vet SG help they desperately need at a very reasonable contract with 2 years left. Sura would bring a lot of consistency and intangibles, and help balance out their young PGs Telfair and Jack by sharing PG duties (setting up the team, making sure the ball gets to Zach, etc). Nice bridge, and example for their young guards and swingmen, quite a contrast from their other vets (DA, Ruben, etc). For the Rockets, we would lose guard size, rebounding and flexibility. We would be forced to find another big 2 or 2/3 via FA or trade who can defend. What we gain is a lot of offensive punch and back-court quickness. DS is a really good scorer, and a more gifted offensive player than any guard on the Rockets roster IMO. He also is outstanding shooter if left open (didn't happen that much for Portland, but every time I see him open he seems deadly, and clutch). DS also is about the same age as Sura--no gain there, but has a more durable history. Overall I am kinda torn about this move. I'd much rather send Wesley (even with the NY 2nd), and I think he would help Portland in many of the same ways as Sura as DW would be a 1 year vet bridge/rental and be an expiring contract. I'd rather send James than Sura too--and would do James for DS strait up, but Portland needs someone to help at SG, which James doesn't. All three of these guys could be traded alone for DS signed at just over 4 mil starting (Wesley allows for more starting salary without adding other players in, the other two do not), fair price to DS as well. Like I said, if DS and Portland are talking with us, I REALLY push Wesley and mid-pick to make this happen. But if push comes to shove and Portland is not budging, do we trade Sura (2 years about 7.3 mil) for Stoudamire (say 4 years, 17 mil), strait up? I’ll give you my answer later, I still have not made up my mind.
for me it's all about Bob's health. If he feels good and it looks like he can endure an entire season then I see no reason to trade him. He's not the best point gaurd but he does enough of evrything to remain valuble on the floor. Remember Sura might have lost a step but he still plays d and rebounds way better than mighty mouse ever could.
Yes Yes Yes. Sura played extremely well for us last season and he really was the X-factor people were saying he would be. But Stoudamire is still and will always be a better player. Sura's rebounding and toughness will be greatly missed, but Stoudamire's shooting, passing, and playmaking ability would be great for this team. Sura for Stoudamire straight up, then we try to package Wesley + pick or expiring contract for a SG.
I know he thru up blanks the last 2 games in the playoffs and his back is iffy, but Sura is a intangible type of player much like barry. Its hard to measure what they do in numbers. When you look at Sura in those games, don't just look at the points, look at the asst, rebs, steals and running the team. People want to say he couldn't keep Terry out of the lane, but neither could Nash. The main reason why our defense was broke down was because Stack would post up our guards and after a while we would have to double. The one thing Terry could always do is shoot. I feel confortable with a James/Sura combo especially if we can upgrade the 2 spot. I dont think getting Damon will keep Nash or Parker out of the lane or keep Chauncy from posting up.
I really think we should keep Sura as a 3rd guard off the bench. He's perfect for that role, and played it well at Golden State. My ideal scenario would be to bring in both DA and Damon via Sign and Trade, while keeping Sura. I'm not sure how realistic that would be, but we'd be in great shape if it went down. Anderson's a very solid, underrated player when healthy (granted, that's a major caveat) and offensively, Damon would be a great fit here. And unless Swift magically becomes a Kevin Garnett-type on the boards, we (and any championship team) need as many rebounders as possible.
I hated to vote for Stoudamire, but I had to. I absolutely loved Sura's hustle, toughness, grit, determination - but I don't feel he'll ever be able to play a healthy season of basketball again. Stoudamire is healthier, faster, a better passer and a better shooter. I think his speed may be able to offset the height difference in terms of defense, but I know defense has never been where Stoudamire has excelled. If you want to play for Van Gundy though, I have to assume you're willing to give your best defensive effort. Otherwise you're going to be fairly miserable for the length of your contract/tenure with the Rockets.
No I wouldn't. I want Damon Stoudamire for our PG and I want to keep Bobby Sura to be our starting SG. I would be willing to part with Wesley for Stoudamire.
it's kinda funny that stoudamire's career rebounding is the same as sura's. overall, i would have to say bring in stoudamire. a good playmaker with swift, mcgrady and yao would be deadly. lose a little on defense but head could make up for that half the time.
HAHA!!! you must have forgotten to look at their career Minutes Per Game...I can't believe all the negativity surrounding Sura. The man played the nite after dislocating his finger from a blow courtesy of Shaq. He's the only "mean guy" on our team and he's "not just mean. he's also good", say T-Mac and JVG respectively. Bobby shot a better overall % last year (and career), a very comparable 3 pt % last year, and brings a better defensive intensity than Damon. I see no reason why JVG or CD would/should consider giving up Bobby for Damon...IMO, Bobby Sura deserves as much credit for our turnaround last year as CD's trades. The man loves the game, and for that i love him.
everyone voting to get rid of Bobby...go watch the game 6 vid where Yao gets fouled. Then ffwd to Bobby throwing down Josh Howard. Now reconsider. Anyway, I think Wesley wouldn't do very well as a 3rd or 4th guard off the bench. And I think Damon/Wesley is too short of a starting backcourt. Therefore, I'm ready to get rid of Wesley. Yes, I know Bobby at the 2 is a liability from the shooting aspect, but read above reasons about Wesley before bringing that up.
As much as I love Bobby Sura's game I would in a heartbeat. Stoudamire is a true PG and scorer. As I mentioned in another thread, look at the world of difference Nash has made for the Suns. He could do the same thing for us.
Just to add, one of the advantages of having Stoudamire is it allows you to rest of McGrady. When McGrady is resting on the bench Stoudamire is a big time scoring option, able to drop 15 to 20 ppg and take over a game.
On paper, it's hard to turn down a trade like that. But for what Sura did for us last year (and I'd admit it's easy to forget), you can't. He was our enforcer, as ridiculous as that might sound...I mean he didn't foul Josh Howard HARD...he tackled the ugly mofo! My loyalty isn't blind, and with that said, I still think Sura deserves ours.
Trade him only if push came to shove. He is a gritty, tough player that every team needs but Mighty Mouse is the better player. Portland is on record as wanting to shed salary (and played hardball w/ the Nets for a #1) so maybe the question should be would you trade next years #1 + Spoon for DS.
But they don't need an PF. In this scenario it is Wesley, whose contract also is big enough to account for any reasonable amout for Damon but not extra like Spoon. Wesley would actually help them next year too before his contract expires. Wesley plus the NY 2nd or a top 29 protected 1st round pick makes a lot of sense for both teams too. I don't know why people want to make a more complicated trade with adding DA or Ruben in there. I absolutely don't want their attitudes or huge contracts on our roster. Sura for Damon strait up, or Wesley + pick (late 1st, NY 2nd), makes a lot of sense for both teams. I lean towards NOT doing the Sura deal, we just lose too much size and flexibility. But I would do the trade with Wesley. I'd try to package Wesley and the NY 06 2nd for DS, or Wesley + Hou 06 1st for DS + Por 2nd (06). Something like this.
Do we really want 5'9" Damon Stoudamire? Why.....I can see all of the Mavs guards shotting ove rhim just like last year...
