http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/writers/ian_thomsen/07/15/brown.pistons/1.html CNNSI - Sports Illustrated's Ian Thomsen reports that Isiah Thomas might take a run later at Phoenix forward Shawn Marion, whose remaining deal for four years and $63 million could become prohibitive if the Suns retain Joe Johnson and re-sign Amare Stoudemire to max deals. By sending Kurt Thomas to Phoenix last month for Quentin Richardson, Thomas essentially supplied the Suns with Marion's replacement at power forward. If the Suns are intent on wiping Marion off their books, trading him to New York prior to the February deadline for the expiring $14 million contract of Tim Thomas would be a logical move.
gimme marion over joe johnson any freakin damn day. stupid suns, well atleast if they do this, i can gaurantee they wont be the first seed.
I said this before in other threads getting rid of Marion is stupid, especially if it is done to be able to keep Johnson. marion is a great player, and a good combo with Amare. And when Nash is getting to old they need a good second player. And Johnson is not that player.
Match Johnson's offer and keep Marion. Wait til the deadline, see who you like better and move the other for expirings. Why can't the Suns do this? I doubt either Johnson's or Marion's stock will drop that badly next year.
Marion is a great player, but he has some glaring weaknesses. He can't really create his own shot. He is more of a finisher and garbage man. Johnson, on the other hand, has a very complete skillset, and he shot great from 3 last year. He showed that even with a broken face, he could create for himself and others against the spurs defense. Marion was missing in action because he was being covered, and he couldn't do anything about it. Granted, it was Bruce Bowen guarding him, but he has to do better that 7 ppg or whatever he averaged in the WCF. I think JJ is a better complement to Nash and Amare. Especially since they have Kurt Thomas rebounding.
Ya, you're right, but the Suns wouldn't bring in Thomas to replace him, they just need his big expiring contract so the Suns don't implode themselves in max contracts.
I would rather have Joe Johnson AND Tim Thomas than just Shawn Marion alone. Obviously Shawn Marion is a lot better than Thomas and the Knicks would win that trade hands down, but if it's between two players for one, you take two, especially with the talent they have. The Suns lacked depth in last year's playoffs and I guess this adds to it. However, I think they are a weaker team now, and definitely won't finish first.
Made-up rubbish. There's been zero talk out of Phoenix (including this article) about moving Marion. Zero. It's been the rest of the league crossing their fingers and hoping that they might be able to steal him for a song. They knew, coming into this offseason, that Joe Johnson could get offers approaching the max. This isn't catching them off-guard. They had a spectacular run last year and have so far re-tooled to put them in better position for next year's playoffs (Kurt Thomas to help defend bigs). They aren't breaking up this team until unforseen in-fighting or injuries (Nash) take them out of realistic contention. Evan
Marion is an outstanding regular season player who rarely shows up when the stakes rise. He also tends to create mismatches, both for opponents (quicker and long range shot for a PF), but also for his team (too small to play a lot of PFs, put him at the 3 and he isn't much of an offensive threat because he doesn't have a good handle for a dribble drive). Johnson is much younger, can play 3 positions, has more upside, and is the better offensive player. (Johnson is also considered their best perimeter defender). If the Suns got at least an unconditional 1st rounder, not a bad move.
isiah thomas could undue any other horrible move with this one. wow, the rockets need to look into marion if they are really dumb enough to move him. hell we've got to have someone who is an equal waste of talent like tim thomas.
The Bulls would be a good destination for Marion if they're into cost-cutting. They could offer Antonio Davis' mammoth expiring contract as well as one of their starters (probably Chandler or Deng)
regradless i feel Marion has more value than Tim Thomas str8 up. IF they were motivated to move marion they will either get some younger players as well or draft picks. If this trade did go through and thomas did start in Marion's place... I bet he'd have a career year playing along side Nash.
except tim thomas has played with some very good PG's in the past and has consistently done very little. i bet nash could get like 16 ppg out of him, that's it. thomas is a colossal waste of talent. marion is one of the best forwards in the NBA and is double-double everynight.
So Thomas wants Marion for Tim Thomas? The same Isaiah Thomas that tried to get Gasol for Penny straightup? Like I thought, 'nuff said.
are you kidding me??? did isiah really try to get gasol for penny straight up??? wow. but sometimes you never know, there are a lot of morons who dress up as GM's out there.
I don't know what Isiah can do after he used up all his expiring contracts. Oh yeah, he will just quit and move on the scr3w up another club.
Nice pun, even if it wasn't intended. Speaking of Tim Thomas, you know, every time I hear all the hype about Marvin Williams (despite unimpressive production at NC) I can't help thinking about all the potential and upside TT was reported to have for so many years ... before we all finally saw the light and gave up on him.
