Poor kitty! The kitty must be traumatized from being separated from the litter and Mom.

I remember when I got my two Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies from the breeder. After I selected them, we took them into his house to finalized the deal. The whole time they wimpered and clawed at the door. They wanted to go back to the backyard with Mom and the other Ridgebacks. On the way home from the breeder, more of the same wimpering and clawing. It was sad.

I recall the puppy turmoil in my house. Those were trying times.

Hang in there! Sad kitty should wear off once used to his new surroundings and owner.

    Meow,

good point Sammie... gr8-1, you might want to let him get acclimated to the vastness of your place gradually. The smells are confusing and scary. If he gets used to them from your bedroom, it might help.

BTW, I've never seen a kitty get really stuck. If the rumor's true, those whiskers make sure that there's no place the kitty goes that the butt can't get out of.

Yeah, 9 weeks is a bit young, and the closet idea is a good one. Make sure you spend time with him while he's in there though. I might go for the whole bedroom actually. I'd try to keep him away from the kitchen until he gets bigger, so he can't climb under appliances.

What are you feeding him? Dry or wet food? Where did you get him?

Milk isn't bad persay, but I wouldn't recommend it because of the diareha issue.

ok, who here lets their cat sleep with them ? I tried that, but he just kept him up all nite, so I finally had to keep him out of my room. Am I wrong to do so ? Will the kitty be mad at me ? He cries alot, but I think it's cuz he's young.

Another sleeping problem is that he insists on sleeping on my pillow, so I can't turn my pillow over.

    hehe . . . first he runs under the fridge and is scared of you . . . now he sleeps on your pillow . . . <masculinity = off>oh how cute [IMG]<masculinity = on>

Well, personally I can't have the cat sleep on my bed because it keeps me up, but if you can get used to it, I bet it's cool. If you have a double, or queen-sized bed, maybe you could get him to sleep on the other side . . .

My cat sleeps on the bed. They tend to be more annoying as kittens in terms of keeping you awake (or waking you up at 2 in the morning because they are bored). But if you want to bond with him more and have him sleep quietly in the bed as an adult cat, its probably better for him to be in that habit now. Setting the rules = good, but isolating him = bad.

Sorry, perhaps an obscure reference. Elmira was the little girl on Animaniacs that used to always grab the non human animals and say "I want to love you and squeeze you"...

the critters would get totally annoyed and try to stay away from Elmira.

Of the two that live with me, my Maggie cat sleeps with me every night. My girls don't get along because Zoe thinks it is great fun to attack poor Maggie. So Zoe is in timeout a lot. Zoe also has to sleep in the bathroom at night because she tends to get into trouble.

As for sleeping with me, Maggie can be irritating. Especially if she is about to go to the bathroom because she feels the need to tell me EVERY time by yowling as loudly as possible. For a while she wouldn't sleep with me because Zoe slept on my bedspread and got her smell all over it. The only way Maggie got back on the bedspread was after I washed it. Damn cat. [IMG]

It is kinda annoying when she wakes me up, but I've gotten so used to her coming in that I now sleep through her crazy episodes. This is a miracle since I'm such a light sleeper.

I love having her sleep with me, but I got her as an older cat so I don't really know how I managed to train her. My cats are the best. [IMG]

HeyP, I may do the blowing thing. I felt bad kicking him out, and I let him back in in the morning. He seems to like me right now though. He is so playful, and he must be having a field day in my apt.

Achebe, would he be offended if I made him sleep outside ? His purring and nuzzling can be distracting. Maybe I can buy him a small bad for my room ?

I don't think he'd be too terribly offended (there's that word again [IMG]). Is it something that he does all night long? When Stella was a kitten, she'd make biscuits on my tummy w/ her claws... which of course hurt like hell & woke me up. After a few days though she got over it.

If you can handle it for a little while, your bond will be better for it.

If him being in your face is the distraction, you can try putting him on the blanket on your chest or next to you near your hand. Do you have a comforter? I ask b/c big heavy blankets make me go to stage 4 and stay stationary. It lets me put Stella on my stomach before I go to bed, and when I wake up she's still there. Another cool thing is that the comforter doesn't move w/ me like a normal blanket (if I do move it stays exactly where it is). Then again, Texas is probably too hot for a comforter. lol.

I'd still be careful about the appliances. He could get caught next to the compressor on the fridge when it comes on, crawl up into the fan, etc. I had one kitten crawl up under the hood of the car and got caught in the fan belt, and had a friend with a kitten who crawled up under the dryer and managed to get next to the drum -- both situations were very bad.

My parents had a cat that got mad at them -- took six newborn kittens out of the pantry, out the cat door, managed to get into the attic, and fixed a nest in the attic -- where most of them promptly fell down into the wall. We cound hear the mewing -- and Mamma Cat was upset. After pulling the washer and dryer out, Dad got to take a hammer to his new, freshly wallpapered wall.

Cat's don't have much sense -- and Kittens no no fear. Since then, my parents have had all their cats fixed.

Have you tried turning on the can opener to get him to come out. The reaction to that sound is genetic; I do believe. lol

I had a cat called Freddie who I raised for 9 weeks like yours. He wanted to sleep on my face. He eventually figured out that I wasn't going to pet him until my eyelids were open. So, he would pat my eyelids to wake me up. Try blowing on their face to get them away from yours. Moving them away with your hands rarely works...they just come back. But they hate blowing on their face, and they don't really know what is happening, so you aren't known as the evil wind blower.

If I left him outside the bedroom when other cats were sleeping with me (yeoooow), he would run head first into the door. I am not kidding. He would head butt the door open. That was a 1920's house with doors that are easy to open. He figured out head butting could shake it lose. When he grew wiser, he learned to wiggle the door with his paw until it magically opened. The head-butting was just crazy.

I have a weird cat philosophy based on Freddie (who died), and another cat "Ibid" who is 9 yrs old now. I got both of them at 8-9 weeks. That is the best time to get them, imo. They were two of the smartest cats I've ever known. Ibid is just crazy smart. My philosophy has actually back-fired with him. What I did with them as kittens is never picked them up and let them do what ever they wanted. Of course, they will just follow you around everywhere. And when they want to be pet, they will run up your leg to get them. No need to pick them up. My strange philosophy was that I didn't want my cats to run away from me when I called them or needed them to come inside. So, I took them for walks and played with them outside, and taught them how to follow me back inside. At first, I had to wait like 10 minutes for them to come in. But they kept following me everywhere, and loved the outside. And all I had to do was whistle or clap to get them to come inside. That's a big plus.

This Ibid is just crazy though. He walks to the coffee shop with me everyday and has walked with me 2 miles once. I used to get worried about him when I'd cross a busy street, and I'd chase him back home just so I could cross the street. He finally learned to just wait for me on the other side. I swear he is autistic. He is so jumpy. He doesn't like to be picked up, or petted, except when he tells you to. An 80 yr old neighbor of mine used to feed him and another cat in the neighborhood. The other cat was all white, so the old man nicknamed him Whitey. My cat he nicknamed "Crazy Cat". And he isn't the only neighbor who's called him that. Ibid will be so loving one second then meow to say "get away" give you about a 5 second count to stop touching him, then he'll attack your wrist.

So much for my kitty raising strategies of not picking them up and training them to follow you. Freddie was a perfect cat, and Ibid is the smartest, yet he's Crazy. I don't know if I'll do the same thing withh my next kitty.

I taught my cat to sleep on my knees. If you read much in bed, it can get pretty annoying though. My cat always thinks that I'm not giving him enough attention, so he'll lay down on my book.

This thread is depressing me :p. We have a lot of cats at home, but the cat that I'm talking about actually died a month ago while I was away at college [IMG]... I think he was my favorite ever. Damned sweetest cat I've ever seen. Used to be like HP's, and followed me around on walks. His name was Alain, and everyone used to think he was a girl because of his name. Which was sort of ironic, since we thought for the first month we had him that he was a girl. His original name was Elaine, so we figured to just change the ifrst letter, so as not to freak him out [IMG]. Then again, I'm enjoying talking about the little bugger.

Come to think of it, I'd like some advice as well. I sort of suspect some crazy redneck neighbors of mine of killing both of the cats we've had that have died since we've lived there. Can't prove anything but... let's just say both cases were suspicious. If my kitties were more wary of strangers, they might be safer... and I don't want them to have to stay inside constantly. Is there any way to teach them to stay away from strangers?
