At this point it looks like we are going to lose Swift to the Nets. I dont see us getting an impact player during the offseason but i don't see all hope as lost. With the amount of expiring contracts we have, we are in prime position to make a splash once the season starts. It seems to me expiring contracts dont come into play until a team unexpectedly tanks, a new coach clashes with a player. It happens every year. Last year Vince Carter and Baron Davis were both given away. I feel someone will become available and we can be there, or have the contracts to facilitate a larger trade with 3 teams. Its nearly impossible to put a name on the block this early, but i feel if we do not get who we want in free agency this will be a major play.
you are correct about our expiring contracts being worth far more at the deadline. this summer, swift, SAR, walker, might all be lost to larger contracts. however we will not go into next season without spending the MLE. marshall will be there as a fall back for sure. he has the same agent as swift and is only asking for MLE. we might actually have a very strong group of PF's next year with AT LEAST marshall-Jho-baxter. wesley and baker might end up being traded in a S&T. the only ending contract i see us holding on to is spoons.
I've said all along that Moochie, Baker, Spoon & Ward's expiring contracts will only be worth anything near the trade deadline. Wesley can still play, so he could be traded this summer. I hate the thought of waiting until January or February, adding a player who doesn't know our system, and depending on that player to significantly help our team. If we strike out on much of what we are after, we'll just have to wait. Friday is only a few more days away.
ya but its expiring. At the trade deadline half of his contract would have already been paid out which is in the area of 3.2 million. a team can contribute up to 3 million dollars cash in a trade which means that someone we trade him to would only be on the hook for around half a million dollars. Plus expiring contracts are used to dump long term deals. so a player would have multiple years left which makes it worth it.
The only thing keeping me from going insane about still having the likes of Spoon, Moochie and Baker on our roster is the fact that expiring contracts are much more valuable as the deadline approaches. Who knows what will happen between now and the trade deadline, we could get a solid player in a firesale.
Does anyone know for sure this is the last year of Moochie's contract? I've read else where that it will run until the end of 2006-07 season. I pray that's false!!
his contract runs out this season, he is on the book for 4.2 million for this year. He might have a team option but he is in the last year.
