DA and Kerr to Portland for Steve Smith is a done deal according to SA TV just now. ------------------
Well, I guess that's better than nothing . . . But the Spurs would be MUCH better off with Derrick Anderson. ------------------ I'm looking for a job, so hire me "And I just have to smile and say 'well, I hope so' while I'm really thinking inside how I'd like to just strangle them and take their job."
I told you guys the Spurs would get something decent for Anderson. He's too greedy to sign for the 4.5 million. Personally, I like the move from the Spurs perspective, and what Steve Smith can bring to them. Giving the Blazers Kerr frees up enough cap room for the Spurs to sign Bruce Bowen, and personally I think they're better off with Smith and Bowen than DA alone. That's definitely debatable though. ------------------ Draftsource.net-- the premier source for draft info. Profiles, rankings, mock drafts, and more! The Mo Taylor Fan Site
Actually they're saying Kerr was included to balance Smith's $9 mil salary so it may not necessarily leave enough cap room to give Bowen what he may be asking. Too bad they couldn't dump J Jackson on the Blazers instead of Kerr though. ------------------
Spurs are dead now. Steve Smith is finished, knees are completely shot. The only team in the West I can see competing with LA next year is Sacramento, with the acquisition of Mike Bibby. What a truly pathetic offseason for the Spurs. Overpaying for soft Robinson, losing a young rising star in DA, and only getting an old, creaky kneed has been to add to their roster. And to top it off losing a talented PF to their nemesis, the Lakers and losing the only true PG on their roster too. Scheez, what is the Spurs organization doing this offseason? Duncan is so out of there in 2003 it's not even funny. ------------------ Get Cato out of there...
Smith may not be as explosive or energetic as DA but when hot is very dangerous. Smith played for Portland so his stats are deceiving. Its hard to determine if his dwindling numbers are caused by lack of quality PT or just age. IMHO it doesn't make the Spurs any better or worse. ------------------
Now the only young player worth a pinch of S**t is Tim Duncan. Outside of him, everyone on the Spurs is headed for retirement in one or two years. They are so screwed, and I love it! ------------------ Protrolls.com! Keep the ???? alive! The ZRBucks!
According to local media the Spurs grand plan goes something like this: Smith was supposed to come with the understanding that he would NOT be getting an extension to his contract. That way nobody currently on the Spurs, except Parker, would have a contract beyond the next two years. At that time Duncan probably opts out and the Spurs are so under the cap that they can sign him and 1 or 2 other super type free agents(which is scheduled to be a good group of FA's),fill in around them, and play in their new arena. Meanwhile, they hope to fill their holes with Smith and ???? and make a run at a title while they have the Twin Tower window. Overall it's an encouraging sign that they're looking(planning) to the future(especially if they pull it off). As for the present, alot seems to still ride on who they get at the 3. Does anyone know if Smith can help at that spot or is he strictly a 2? ------------------
I agree that the Spurs have had a horrible offseason, but any team with Duncan and Robinson should still contend. Now after 2003 the Spurs could become a lottery team, but at this point they still have 2 more years of contending. BTW, the Spurs have 25 million dollars in cap room the offseason when Duncan becomes a free agent. So even if Duncan flees(hopefully to the Rockets ), they still have a load of money to spend. ------------------ "I look kind of dumpy. Look at my butt. With zone defenses in effect and the twin towers in the middle, Smith could play the 3 and have Antonio start at the 2 if they lose out on Bowens. I wonder if they acquire Bowens, and have Smith at the 2, who will they start at the 1. They better start Antonio, or they will be a pretty slow team in the backcourt. Duncan and Robinson may be 2 of the best running big men in the game, but they need a ballhandler to run with them. I don't think Steve Smith or Terry Porter could do that. They need some athleticism in the 1 spot. ------------------ "I look kind of dumpy. Look at my butt. And what kind of shoes do they have me wearing? I think that Smith CAN play the 3, but you still have no bench and you just got older with this addition. At least they got something for DA, but it may not be enough in the West to win more games then last year or even match that same total. Well since they drafted Parker 1st round, you may as well start him. If you run Tony at the 1, AD at the 2, Steve at the 3, stay healthly, and hope the bench can do something...48 wins. ------------------ Take the blue pill, and wake up from the computer dream world. I like this deal for Portland. Steve's at the end of a nice pro career, but his knees are just about gone. He'll be able to do what he does best..shoot the rock. There will be plenty of open jumpers in that offense. He can't play D anymore... this move makes me question the Spur's athleticism even more. The salary is an albatross even if it is part of some grand plan to resign Duncan...sad to see Steve on the slide. Portland's getting a player that can do it at both ends of the floor..and he has upside at that.Anderson is young and plays with heart.Kerr, heaven forbid,if the Jailblazers make a run...is the perfect role player on a contender. ------------------ Everybody has a little bit of Watergate in em - Billy Graham [This message has been edited by hardwood (edited July 24, 2001).]
Good deal for the Spurs. Instead of losing Derek Anderson for nothing, they got a solid, perimeter shooting and scoring 2-guard in Steve Smith. Smith still contributed about 13 ppg. If they can get Bruce Bowens, and another decent big man they are in good shape. The Spurs haven't had a disasterous offseason. Smith may be a slight step down, but that is their only loss. Samaki Walker wasn't anything that couldn't be replaced. Re-signing Danny Ferry will be important though. ------------------ "Instruments are like women: After a while, you want to make love to another." - Nicolas Godin of the musical duo Air
I think that Portland makes out like BANDITS in this deal, but I know EXACTLY how Spurs fans are treating this. Note that I'm in Houston now, but I know Spur fan all too well, and I can picture the people right now: "Man, look at the Spurs man, they got a lot better. We didn't need no Derrick Anderson anyways. Twin Towers forever." Or "Derrick Anderson sucked. We didn't like him. We want Steve Smith more. No one wanted him here anyways. The Spurs prove once again that it is the best franchise in the NBA. They turn a defeat like losing DA into getting a great player like Steve Smith. GO SPURS GO!" Now I like Steve Smith and all, but there is NO WAY that he's better than Derrick Anderson. He may be a better player or fit for the Spurs system, but they basically trade youth, athleticism and an up and coming player for a solid veteran who has been hampered by injuries. But Spurs fans will talk about how they are even better now and have a better future now than they ever did with Derrick Anderson. They'll trash DA to no end too. They are the most unknowledgable, fickle fans in the world. I know I'm ranting about Spurs fans, but I hate them so much!! I don't really hate the Spurs team, I just hate Spurs fans!! And I hate that stupid Coyote. As I waited around for that idiot, I missed an appointment, and when I finally leave, that freak shows up, and I end up missing the mascot tryouts. If that stupid Coyote EVER comes up to me at a game, I swear I will kick the crap out of him like CB used to do. Alright, that's it for tonight . . . ------------------ I'm looking for a job, so hire me "And I just have to smile and say 'well, I hope so' while I'm really thinking inside how I'd like to just strangle them and take their job."
Most Spurs fans see this as getting something for a player that was leaving town. The thing is, for whatever reason, the Spurs definitely seemed not to care what happened with DA. They pursued Christie, then McKie, while virtually ignoring DA, then they make him these short term offers and finally the one with the incentives...why? I think they simply wanted him to leave on his own and get them something in return for a sign and trade. I see this as a treading water type of move...DA is the better athlete, but Smith is definitely more experienced and smarter on the court. DA offers more creativity, Smith offers wiser shot selection. Defensively, it's a wash...DA comes up with more steals, Smith poses more problems with his height. The concern now is that the Spurs find a slasher/scorer type at the 3. ------------------ It's a cool site, this clutchcity.net
Ven, You are COR...RECT!! They could not wait for DA to leave, and they have been bad mouthing him ALL morning. The Spurs front office is as bad as the Spur fan. If you play for the Spurs, you are the greatest thing next to sliced bread, but the minute it's contract time if you don't bend for the TEAM...you are greedy and should be cut. Remember these are the fans that less then a week ago some said if Dave doesn't settle, them trade him!! Do what's best for the team and the fans...even if it's not the best for the player. San Antonio will be a ghost town in 2 years when the Spurs fall off. I hope a football team goes to SA soon...but being 2nd rate with a arrogant attitude does hurt.
This is the thing about DA that I think is so much more important than ANYTHING they get with Steve Smith: Youth Before the Spurs got him, I would argue to Spur fan that the team was basically one young star with a bunch of old has-beens. Derrick Anderson offered hope for the future. With him, I felt the Spurs were a solid team that finally had another young guy to build around. Antonio Daniels, Derrick Anderson and Tim Duncan would be the foundation for a team for many years. I figured that by having an exciting young player in Derrick Anderson, the team would be able to use that as a stepping stone to putting more young players around Duncan, and keeping him a Spur. As much as I hated to admit it, the Spurs would be contenders for many years. It was their version of Barkley and Kevin Johnson. Not quite the same, but go with me on the PF and G concept here -- post up player and slasher/scorer. Sure, this is better than losing DA outright, but if it's between DA or Steve Smith, I go DA. And it seems to me that Anderson would've resigned with the Spurs, but he felt slighted by their treatment of him during the Robinson process. Basically, the Spurs have 2 more years, then it's lotto time again. I hope OUR free agents don't feel that way . . . ------------------ I'm looking for a job, so hire me "And I just have to smile and say 'well, I hope so' while I'm really thinking inside how I'd like to just strangle them and take their job."
Ok am I missing something here? Didn't Derek Anderson ALREADY sign with Portland, and now he go traded? ------------------
That's debatable. They will have 25 mil in caproom the summer Duncan's a FA. If they can somehow attract a star FA and another impact FA, that may be enough to lure Duncan to stay. But if Duncan bolts, I don't think SA will be a very popular spot for FA's to go to. ------------------ "I look kind of dumpy. Look at my butt. And what kind of shoes do they have me wearing? What are you talking about?!?! Steve Smith is a big time defensive liability. Zone defenses and the Twin Towers behind him are the best things that could have happened to him. If the Spurs don't get Bowen, and have to put Smith on Kobe, Smith will get torn to shreds. On the offensive side, it can be debatable as to whether DA or Steve Smith is better. ------------------ "I look kind of dumpy. Look at my butt. And what kind of shoes do they have me wearing?
