Is becoming a certified 6 Sigma Green Belt worth the money paid for the course? This is a new thing and I am not very familiar on its demand in industry. From what I understand, it is very expensive to take the class. Does becoming 6 sigma Green Belt certified help you land jobs in industry? Does it raise your salary? I have the same question with respect to getting a Project Management Certificate. Is that also a beneficial certification to have? Your help is appreciated. Thanks
I can tell you PMI certification (from www.pmi.org) is considered a strong asset by the headhunters I speak to.
I thought you were a college professor? Not sure how that would bump your pay/desirability. In the private sector is does seem to be a big deal.
The PMP got me my job...not sure if it got me more money. It is worth it if it gets you the position you want vs. not getting it. PMP seems more mainstream...never had any one ask for 6 Sigma.
They were doing Six Sigma I believe at GE and I know Ford was doing it while I was interning. It seems like a bunch of silly jargon that someone published and is sitting back on a beach enjoying the millions he scammed off big companies. I honestly think it's beneficial if the company you are looking to join believes in (or knows about) it. Most of the time, you can get a job through someone you know or submitting resumes though so I'm not sure if these are really all that helpful.
Six Sigma is a joke. It's the solution for a question that wasn't asked. All those quality engineering squirrels at my office walk around with their Green Belt certifications like they mean something. Really those projects were mostly meaningless power point slides with pretty charts that didn't really net any real process improvements or cost savings.
6 sigma is the idea that you are never satisfied with what you have, your goal is to reach 6 sigma (not currently possible in just about any area). I could just as well substitute 9 sigma here and call it something. If you can truely reach 6 sigma of rejects then you should be able to crush competition. Now everyone is just throwing around 6 sigma without even understanding what it means exactly (2 part per billion) That's like you are not allow to have one reject car for all the cars currently produced in the world. The concept is still valid though.
Its big in GE and I thought the Space Industy, but could be wrong...If thats what you want to do, it'll get you in the door, the rest is up to you/them...
My company is big into 6 sigma. It would be a plus if you are already certified. If you were not we would probably hire with the condition that you become certified in a certain time frame. Then we would pay for the training.
If you do not mind, could you send info for the job that your company has. That would be the perfect opportunity for someone I know. I would appreciate it if you would shoot an e-mail to cthomas17@hotmail.com . Thanks
