Megan has a serious and rare condition called chronic myeloid leukaemia. Around five to 10 children are diagnosed with this leukaemia each year in Australia.

Professor Stewart Kellie says this terrible type of cancer will ultimately prove fatal unless a bone marrow transplant is carried out. But there's a problem. Megan has Anglo/Asian parents, which means she requires bone marrow from someone of this mixed race and there are very few Eurasians registered at the bone marrow bank.

So the search is on, preferably for Chinese Eurasians, between 18 and 40 years old. All that's required initially is to give blood.

Each country has one or two national marrow donor registries. When an unrelated donor search for a patient is initiated, the national registry/ies will be searched, but in many cases other registries as well. The search is often a worldwide effort, because for many patients a donor cannot be found in their country.
