I am actually interested in finding out more about which online gaming sites are commercially successful, and with which business model...I need something like an overview of the competitive landscape. I am more interested in simple online games, not so much in really complex stuff like Everquest or so.

I'd also like to know if anyone knows where to get an old leisure suit larry game. I'm looking for his third one.

If the game has been abandoned by the publisher, you can probably download it from a site like Abandonia or Home of the Underdogs. Although the last time I checked out HotU, it was a real pain to download something.

    Hey Rocketman95

I'm creating a new Utopia account on Swirve, and it wants a "Ruler's Name:"

    What do I put there?

I remember reading an article in the WSJ about the British holding company that owns PartyPoker going public. It was a couple of weeks ago. I know that Sportsbook.com is public (in the UK). All those guys are making money hand over fist, but are anxiously awaiting the US legislature's decision on whether or not to make gambling over the internet illegal. Hopefully that doesn't pass.

Oh my God... this game is all TEXT BASED?!?!?!?

That is so .... damn .... lame

What year is this? isn't it 2005 or something? Didn't the text-based crap die off about 30 years ago?!?!?

Don't get me wrong - I like the Swirve site. But I had no idea Utopia was all text-based. Very disappointing.

    :D

I played that game a few years back. Was pretty fun, reminded me of the days I used to use hyper terminal to dial up to a local text based only online game.

    ARe you serious?!?!?

You know, if you created a flash-based Utopia, you could potentially destroy other online games like World of Warcraft or Everquest.

Yup, it's wildly popular, especially in random places like Sweden, Romania, the Netherlands, Australia, Malaysia and Singapore, and of course the U.S. and Canada.

I dunno if Major's ever thought about that.

The benefit of it being flash-based is that no software would have to be installed on user computers. That's good for users - they can play from anywhere (including work), and it's good for your company because you don't have to distribute and support software.

Now, I don't think you could get the high graphics quality of the WoW and Everquest games, but if your PC hardware requirements were moderate, you could have some decent quality. With good game play, it could be a success.
