UofD is just barely a D1 school. I think they play in the Mid West Great Lakes Don't Do **** In The Tourney(MWGLDDSITT) conference. They have only made made the Tourney a handful of times and their big claim to fame is that Dick Vital coahed there for a time. I think that they have a few players go on to the NBA, but not many. They have no football program that is worth note. I was referring to UofM when I said college sports. True, it's 45 minutes from the city, but that's an average commute in Detroit and most Detroiters consider it their school.

Dallas is far more like Detroit than Houston is. Houston's suburbs haven't robbed the city's tax base in the way they have in Dallas or Detroit...that crumbles the inner-city and spurs development outside of the city center.

Yeah, and in Houston, every year, rioting vandals set the entire city on fire to celebrate Halloween.

... no wait, that's not Houston.... what city does that?

I would say Chicago would be the closest to fitting that bill, but it's closer to a 5 hour drive.

I'd imagine Chicago is the major market closest to Detroit (if not geographically, then spiritually as a rival), and I don't think they do high hair there...

Detroit isn't the only metro in Michigan, BTW. The Grand Rapids area is pretty much the same as the San Antonio area. I saw some television market thing that either had them tied or one right above the other. They don't have a major franchise like the Spurs though.

That hasn't happened here in a long time, although we still fear it enough that the fire and police are on high alert, citizen patroles are organized that night and a curfue is put in place for 8:00.

    It hasn't happened in Houston in a long time, either. It's been... oh, I'd say...... N E V E R

Wow. That is amazing. I couldn't find one Houston riot in a quick google search. How do you keep civil unrest subdued like that? Oh yeah I forgot, ya'll got Klan down there keeping things in check.

That's precisely correct. When we won two consective NBA championships, all of Houston rushed to the streets to riot and overturn cars. Unfortunately for them, however, the streets were already flooded with white-hooded klansmen who ensured that no rioting would take place. Intimidated by the Klansmen, the riotous crowd sprinkled themselves with pixie dust and floated away to Neverland, where they released their riot rampage on Peter's Pan's turf. The end.

    Pie,
All you had to do was ask and I could have recruited some of my fellow Klansmen to come up there and keep **** straight for you when yall won. That or just shipped you a bunch of our pixie dust to just get everyone home safely. If you make it to the playoffs again next year, hit me up and I'll see what I can do to line it up early.

Good one! I was just yanking your chain with the Klan crack BTW. It is pretty amazing that there hasn't been a "riot" in houston since 1917 or some such thing. I just get a little defensive when people instantly equate Detroit with riots. It hasn't happened in 20+ years and we have had a 7 Championships to celebrate since then without incident.

I passed up the opportunity to go to the MLB All-Star Game this year. Why? Because I hate Detroit (and, to be fair, I do have a ton of things to do before I move). Last time I was in Detroit, I had a knife pulled on me within 2 hours of setting foot there (I was able to run away). No offense, but thanks, but no thanks.

Considering all the annoying botherations in Houston, it really IS amazing we haven't snapped and rioted before.

We had been living in Houston for 2 weeks when someone pulled a gun on my wife while driving down Sam Houston Tollway. That crap happens everywhere.

Wow! If that's the case and the fires don't occur, sounds like Detroit has improved a bit. Hey - how's the recent auto struggles in GM and Ford affecting Detroit?

Pretty heavily. As you would guess just about everything here is connected to the auto industry. When the auto workers stop working they stop buying stuff and so the dominos start to fall. Just like in the 70's, the folks that were here for work are leaving and the natives sweat it out.

*shrug* One bad experience ruins it for me. If it's within my power, I will never visit Detroit again.
