    OK bear with me on this one. As some of you know I am from Detroit, well the Detroit suburbs anyway. The town I live in is on the northern boarder of Detroit. I have never been to Houston and have only been to Texas on a few business trips to Dallas. However, since being on this sight I have noticed quite a few similarities between our two cities.

    First there are the major events that have come or are comming to towns recently. 2004 All Star Game in Houston, 2005 All Star Game in Detroit. 2005 Super Bowl in Houston, 2006 Super Bowl in Detroit.

    Inferstructure issues. From what I have read on this sight traffic is a absolute bear in Houston as it is in Detroit. There are not enough lanes on the freeways, there is constant construction and public transportation is a joke.

    Astros vs. Tigers - Admiditly the Tigers are behind the Astros as far as current standings show, but the Tigers are on the up swing as the Astros are.

    Texans vs. Lions - Both teams drafted a high end QB in the same round in the same year to start the building process. Again I think the Texans are ahead here but the lions are gonna be much better this year.

    Rockets vs. Pistons - While the Pistons have the upper hand here they are similar in that they are both hard working teams without many super stars.

    Hockey - OK no Hockey in Houston, but how the hell would you keep the ice from melting anyway.

    College Sports - Lots of tradition and loyalty on both sides of this one.

    Highschool sports - Texas and Houston in particular have hands down the best football players in the country. The same could be said for Detroit in regards to basketball.

    Industry - Houston = Oil, Detroit = Cars. Could two industries fit hand in hand more?

    Weather - OK I know it gets stupid hot and humid in Houston, but it was 91 degrees and about 75% humidity. Plus I think our extreme cold match your extreme heat. Just like in Texas where the utilities can't shut off electricity service to keep the AC going in Michigan they can't shut off gas to keep the heat going.

    I guess I'm saying I need to visit Houston. I think I would like it there.

    About the only similarties that work out of this are the Superbowl - All Star pairings and the Texans - Lions comparison.

    The Astros and Tigers are worlds apart in terms of history and current stature. The Rockets are in no way like the current Pistons, we're a two star team, they're an ensemble. About the only similarity is the defense. As far as College sports goes, I wasn't aware of any public D1 school in Detroit. You could, however, make the case that the majority of Detroit and Houston college fans are from the two conglomerate state schools that have nothing to do with the actual town. For high school, Houston usually cranks out the top NBA prospects too.

    Although we don't win very often in pro sports, rioting is fairly rare in Houston.

    :p

    Seriously though, you should make it down to Houston... 'tis a good town.

    No offense Fattie, but anybody that compares Detroit to another city is just insulting the other city.

    *ducks and runs*

    :D

    Oh yes, and don't forget both Houston and Detroit have been dubbed "America's Fattest City".

    I would consider twice in 37 years rare, and that is if you count the post '84 World Series celebration a riot.

    Yes, the Tigers have a much greater history than the Astros, but haven't been much recently (although the Astros haven't really done much with their good teams in the playoffs).

    As far as colleges, UM is as close to Detroit as the suburbs of Houston are to Houston in travel time. And it is very much a part of the city and not "nothing to do with" it. And I'm not sure what Houston city colleges/universities are thought of highly in terms of sports? UH? Rice maybe in a couple sports but not the biggies.

    And is that a serious crack about Houston cranking out the NBA prospects but Detroit not? Or am I misunderstanding that and you're saying they both do, because Detroit has and has had a ton of NBAers.

    Overall, I'd say the cities are comparable in their status as disrespected places where sports and sportsfans can find a ton of high quality events/attractions.

    I actually wasn't aware that Houston had so many NBA players representing.

    I guess that is what I was trying to say.

    There is no "University of Detroit" like there is in Houston. So who else are Detroit folk gonna root for, or where else can they go to school? No school truly affiliated with the town (at least athletics wise). Ann Arbor is what, 45 minutes out? And East Lansing is about 1.5 hours? I'd be interested to see how many University of Michigan institutions are in Detroit.

    You misunderstood me. Both produce world class NBA talent.

    That's something I'd agree with any day.

    That's what I said... Houston was (is?) the Fattest City in America! ;)

    (you weren't trying to imply Dallas was "my" city, were you? booo!)

    Actually, there is a University of Detroit (it used to be called Detroit Mercy, but is now U of D) and they are division one. Among others, Willie Greene went there.

    UH is 45 minutes from most of Houston, so I'm not getting why that matters anyway. 45 minutes is 45 minutes. Is the city's name in the title that important?

    With the title of this thread, you tickled my programming funny bone:

    HTML:
    foreach $game (@detroit_vs_houston) { push $cheer @houston;}
    if (game_winner = detroit_team) {boo_detroit();}
    print "Detroit sucks.\n";

    EDIT: dang BBS says "HTML code" when it's clearly PERL. :mad:

    :confused: WTF???

    Division one in football and basketball? How large is their enrollment? How long have they been around? I'm naturally curious.

    As for your second comment, well, I really don't understand where you're going with that arguement. Are you trying to say Houston traffic is bad, so UH isn't a part of the Houston community? No, the cities name in the title isn't important, just like with Rice or St. Thomas in Houston.. they deal directly with the Houston community and have a great impact on the community directly.

    This is why I was asking you if Mich St or Michigan had any institutions or anything established in the Detroit area. But I'm sure since Michigan is such a small state compared to Texas, that those universities have a large impact on Michigan's largest city by default because of both their proximity to Detroit and the fact that Detroit is the only metroplex area in Michigan (I assume). Unlike in Texas, where there are basically 4 different metro areas and he influences of large State schools such as UT and A&M are moreso spread out.

    I'm saying that the university of Michigan is as much a part of Detroit as the University of Houston is to Houston because they are both just as accessible. They're both considered a part of what makes the city.

    I don't know about football, but Detroit Mercy is D1 in basketball at least. They've produced a couple NBAers in the last few years and have been in the NCAA tournament a number of times. They've been around for like 75 years or something (a long time at any rate). I have no idea regarding the enrollment, but I would guess it's rather large.

    I see what you mean now. I forget some times that all states aren't as sprawled out as Texas :D

    I don't know who told you that U of H was 45 minutes outside of Houston, but you've been misinformed.

    I like it. I always thought of us more similar to Chicago, but I guess you could make a case for Detroit.

    Does Detroit have a rival city that's about a 4 hour drive away? A city where all the ladies have big hair and everyone's trying to keep up with the Joneses? That'd be the icing on the cake.
