Wow. I had no idea to think about all this stuff. I was just gonna write a check for several thousand dollars b/c marble and granite "look cool" and go with my decor.

Dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb! I thoroughly research any electronics purchase I make, but I'm ready to pay out the ass to the first guy I find in the yellow pages to fix up my house just b/c i want to get it over with!

I'm glad you caught yourself before you made mistakes that typical new homeowners make - overspending!

We bought our first house in May. The first trip to Home Depot as a homeowner was an entirely new experience. Eye-opening to say the least.

No kidding. I've always hated going to Home Depot b/c I thought it was the most boring store.

My first trip after buying my new house was amazing. I saw so many things I wanted to buy!!!! Freaked me out a bit.

Man, I went to Home Depot and wanted to buy every gadget there... luckily I left with just some garbage bags. :D

Here are some natural/synthetic stone links for you guys who are interested :

    Cambria : http://www.cambriausa.com/
    Zodiaq : http://www.zodiaq.com/
    Avanza : http://www.avanzausa.com/index.aspx (thanks codell)
    Caesar Stone : http://www.caesarstoneus.com/
    Silestone : http://www.silestoneusa.com/
    Technistone : http://technistoneusa.com/index.shtml

One thing about doing this... consider doing the backsplash in the same stone. With granite and I'm sure any quartz stone, they may need to reinforce the walls to do this however - ask! Ripping it out and installing something new ain't cheap, so make sure you get what you want.

If anyone's interested, I got Ubatuba granite in my kitchen. It's a dark green with gold and lighter green flecks in it.

Oh my God, you guys sound like Frank from 'Old School'. Remember this?:

Spanish (Rick Gonzalez): "Come hit this right here! You need to hit this!"

Frank: "No, I appreciate it, but I told my wife I wouldn't drink tonight. Besides, I got a big day tomorrow, but but you guys have a great time."

    Spanish: "Big day, doing what?"

Frank: "Well, um, actually a pretty nice little saturday, we're um, we're gonna go to Home Depot. Yeah, buy some wallpaper, maybe get some flooring, stuff like that. Maybe Bed Bath And Beyond, I don't know. I Don't know if we'll have enough time."

    lol.

It could be worse... I have a Lowe's that just opened about a mile down the road west of me. Down the same road, if you go east about 2 miles, you'll find they're building a new Home Depot. Yes... that's right... I'm going to be sandwiched between a Lowe's and a Home Depot. I must fight the urges to buy high powered stuff I don't need...

As an early twenties person, this thread scares the crap out of me.
