Not sure about that..but i think most will stay in cause its cheap. I play the 10 cent 25 cent games and for the most part they are really close to playing right....the higher you go up the better but right around that they play pretty decent.
That's what I guessed, but I've just been burned from some tourneys I've played in here in the suburbs, full of guys a few years younger than me throwing their parents money and student loans around.
If you're not playing for money, then you can't expect people to take the game seriously. There's nothing to lose. Playing poker without actual money is the biggest waste of time.
Oops, didn't read this. Smaller money tourneys are the same. From my experience, it doesn't get serious until $5 small blinds.
When we play amost friends depending on who's house it we have different styles. usually we play at least like 5 people $20 buy in tournament style. Everyone starts out with $4000 in chips and the top 3 get a peice of the prize. 50 for first 30 for second and third gets their entry back. We used to do money just for the top guy but then it got boring after a while. We also do cash games where minimum buy is $20 bucks and then you can rebuy as much as you want and sit and go basically.
the game i'm addicted to right now at my local casino is the 1-2 no limit table. sometimes you get to catch cheap flops if you have a late table position and nobody raises, otherwise, it's all out strategy and guts. oh, and the minimum buy in is $100 while the max is $200, so there's usually no HUGE chip leader which means it's fairer (chip leader usually has about 500-800 depending how long the table's been open). i walked yesterday up $270. going back right...NOW.
Your lucky wish i had casinos closer to play. I played one time in lake Charles but only 3-6-12 and it sucked cuase people stay in and catch stupid stuff....and there are a few no limit tables but didn't play that last time. There is only like 1 or two of the casinos with poker rooms...do't find them that often.
I have no idea...but pretty much 60% of the interns at my bank had poker as their number one activity. In fact, one kid created a program that goes to online sights and bets for him (actually, this is very cool and I am trying to get a peek at this alleged program..)
Seriously, I've played everything from $.25 - $.50 tables to $25 - $50 tables, and every online table has these same "I could give a chit about my money, I'm in it until the river" rats, which is why I rarely play online anymore. With the '05 WSOP about to be shown on ESPN starting next week, expect it to get worse. More rooks thinking they know all, more stupid calls, more morons flooding the online sites. No thanks. I'll stick with watching my buddies get lit and taking their cash every weekend here at the casa. They think I cheat. I think they drink too much too quickly while at the felt. I'm buying a new Borla exhaust for my Z with winnings from last months stupidity by them. I like it when they binge. 'Bode me.
The other thing i don't like is the fact that the online gaming ones i have seen it way to many times that they always put up a good hand versus another good hand to increase the bets therefore increasing the rakes and that will always screw one of the players. Too many times a flush wil come with a straight and just jack you up...you lose someone else wins and they rake a crap load.
my friends and i play the same tournament style as you, except it's only top 2 get paid. it's a blast too. and even in our home games, there are bad players who play with real money just like the people Kelly is describing who play with play money. totally dead money.
Decided to try PartyPoker for the tourneys (couldn't get em working in TruePoker), and though I am by no means good, at least I'm not stupid. That seems to be the common trait there, which allowed me to come back from $700 to beat some dude who had $4000 or so in chips. Thank you, pocket-rockets beating a gutshot draw.
