With all the talk of only having the MLE and it not being enough. Are NBA teams allowed to offer signing bonuses? I know the Rockets have a couple trade exemptions and that we will most likely let them expire. Are we allowed to offer the TE to a player as a bonus? Ex. Signing Swift for the MLE as well as giving him our 2.2M TE as an incentive (or whatever amount). Nike? Gator?
AFAIK, there are no signing bonuses in the NBA. the TE is for exchanging with a team for a contract, not for giving to a individual...its only monetary value is to a team with regards to their salary cap. and its GATER
I wasn't implying that you can literally give the TE, but that you can let it expire and then cut another check to the player. But I guess it's moot since you cannot give a signing bonus anyways.
This isn't the NFL. All NBA contracts are guaranteed. The fact the money is guaranteed negates the need for a signing bonus. The NFL has very very few guaranteed contracts, which is why the signing bonuses are such a big deal.
well...theoretically, if signing bonuses were allowed....the TE would not have to be brought into it...if the owner was so inclined, he could just cut a check like for any expenses...and save the TE for the purpose it is designed for...to pick up a player without having to giveup anyone...our large one from the TM trade has already expired, and I think we are down to less than 2M(but Im not positive on the numbers off the top of my head)
The weird thing about trade exemptions is that I cannot recall any player that has been traded for one recently. Maybe I don't pay attention enough, but it seems that a lot of teams just let them expire.
You're right, I guess I forgot. I guess the mods can lock this one up since the question was answered.
