Mashed potatoes - with or without gravy?

    I was asking myself the same question, I have never heard it called cream gravy, always white or country.

    Gravy ruins the inherent taste of the potato.

    Might as well just throw crisco on it and ruin it all.

    I believe that "country" gravy and "cream" gravy are the same (and if not, they're damn close). Growing up in Houston, we've always referred to it as cream gravy, though.

    You know it is the off-season when one of the hot topics on the clutchfans bbs is whether or not it is "country gravy" or "creamy gravy"! :eek: :p :D

    Potatoes are just Gods platform for delivering the sause you couldn't soak up with the meat. Eating plain potatoes is like eating the plate.

    Hmm... interesting.

    Now what exactly is chicken fried steak? Is it beef with a breaded coating that is deep fried?

    No, I'm not a Southerner and have never been to Texas, although I have learned not to put beans in my chili. ;)

    That is exactly what it is. There is also Chicken Fried Chicken...substitute a chicken fillet for a beef patty. I like mine submerged in cream gravy.

    I.... I.... I don't know where to begin....

    It's round steak that has been pounded thin, then coated with something like buttermilk/egg, then covered with a flour/seasoning mixture (sometimes it is then re-dipped and floured), and then pan/deep fried in oil. (Recipes vary a bit). Served with a cream (or "country") gravy, this is an amazingly delicious delicacy of the south.

    I pity you for not having access to such amazing delights!

    most of the time i eat mine w/o gravy. i could eat it with some gravy but my number 1 way of eating it is with peas mixed in. thanks to my mother, there is no other way.
