Where you work, do an alarming proportion of your customers seem to be appallingly stupid? BC is a first-tier university... yet at as a clerk at the government documents and microfiche desk... I can tell you: these people are idiots!

Two things get on my nerves more than anything else, and sadly, it seems most people who ask for help are doing one of them.

    1. Some people don't understand what an "abstract" is. We put our copies of "Dissertation Abstracts" online as soon as we get them... yet people always come with the printed page, and ask to see the freakin' book itself, thinking the entire dissertation is there. IT'S AN ABSTRACT, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! Even when you tell them that, they insist you're mistaken. Then you show it to them, then they get mad at you for not having what they want.

    2. People want me to do their research for them. Just 5 minutes ago, this girl came in (interrupting me from brousing clutchcity.net!!!), and said: "I'm looking for a document about the census." Then she looked at me expectantly. What the Hell!??! We have THOUSANDS of documents about every census, and she thinks THAT'S enough information? I prompted her with a raised eyebrow, but the nimwit didn't seem to get that. So I asked courteously, "Specifically, what document are you looking for?" Of course, she didn't reply clearly. She hadn't looked up ANYTHING on our online catalogue... just wanted me to do her work for her. I sent her right to the computer... and of course she came back in 5 minutes, unable to figure it out. So I looked it up for her. And got it for her. And showed her how to use the fiche machine. ARgh!

    What are your experiences?

As a clerk, it is your job to help people.

Not everyone is born with the inherent knowledge of how to use library resources, y'know.

Seems to me like you need a nice dose of prozak. Either that or a new job..

fadeaway: Sort of aggressive, aren't you? I never mind helping people. I do mind people not even ATTEMPTING to do anything on their own. Not reading simple instructions, and asking me to do all THEIR work. I'm not a research assistant. There's a differences between not needing help, and needing a babysitter.

    *shrug*...

I would clog & kill clutchcity.net's bbs server with my thoughts on this one, so I will just say that, yes, I work with and have had many experiences with stupid people at my work!

You're calling me aggressive? You're the one who went on the big tirade.

Anyways, I still think you need some prozac. You remind me of the stereotypical postal worker on the verge of a breakdown. [IMG]

Ha! I'm off, and without hurting anyone :p. Probably shouldn't have wrote that, incompetence just annoys me. Especially when it's stuff you're supposed to know. Like, I didn't work at the library until my sophomore year... but they give you an info-tour when you're a freshman, and that tour INCLUDES a lot of the info that poeple don't know.

BTW, my dad's a shrink... and let's just say I've made a definitive decision NEVER to take an anti-depressant [IMG].
