The San Antonio Express-News reported on its Web site Wednesday that Robert Horry will remain with the San Antonio Spurs after agreeing to a three-year deal with the team. Houston television station KRIV also reported the agreement. Financial details were not disclosed. Horry has won six NBA titles, including the 2005 championship while making key shots down the stretch for the Spurs in a seven-game series against the Detroit Pistons. With his sixth title, the lanky forward joined the elite club occupied by Michael Jordan and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Free agents can't sign with a team until the terms of the league's collective bargaining agreement are settled later this month, but that appears to now be a formality for Horry and the Spurs. "As soon as he is allowed to sign the contract, he is going to sign it," Robert Barr, who represented the 13-year veteran in negotiations, told the Express-News on Tuesday. The paper reported there is a clause in the third year of the deal that would allow the Spurs to buy out the final year. Horry's reputation for making clutch shots was on full display in Game 5 in Detroit. Horry scored the Spurs' final five games, calmly draining a 3-pointer with five seconds left in overtime to put San Antonio up 3-2 in the series. Horry came off the bench to score 15 points in Game 7, including a key 3-pointer with 8:22 left in the fourth quarter to exetend the Spurs' lead to five. The Pistons never got closer than three points the rest of the way. Horry spent 6½ seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers and helped them win three consecutive NBA championships. But they elected to let him go after he struggled in the 2002-2003 season. He signed with the Spurs. Barr said while Horry considered signing with the Dallas Mavericks, "Robert's love for the Spurs organization, head coach Greg Popovich and the city of San Antonio was too much for him to walk away from." Why? We gave it to Charlie Ward. But 3 years is a little long for a guy Horry's age. But he has proven to be more effective in the playoffs than a lot of other players. 3 years in San Antonio? Yuck.
Excellent news. No more nostalgia threads about wanting to re-sign him in Houston. He's a coat tail rider and the Rockets' coat tails aren't big enough for him at this point in time. A bullet I'm glad we dodged.
I'm just happy that Horry will have more chances to win rings even if it isn't with the Rockets. It is also good that San Antonio is rewarding him for his excellent play. He won game 5 when Duncan tried to give it away. I think for that Duncan should be paying his salary.
Did they purposely leave out Bill Russell, along with a handful of other Celtics with more than six rings?
sad, sad, sad. oh, well. the rockets had a chance to resign one of their legends. maybe somehow we can get Sam Cassell back!
