Woman Dies in Underground Plastic Surgery

MIAMI (Reuters) - South Florida police searched for a man suspected of accidentally
killing a woman during underground plastic surgery to enlarge her buttocks.

Vera Lawrence, a 53-year-old employee in Miami-Dade County's community development division, died on Tuesday in a local hospital after being injected in the buttocks with either silicon or collagen, said police in the Fort Lauderdale suburb of Miramar.

Hospital officials phoned police to report the suspicious death of the woman, brought in by fire-rescue workers after suffering breathing difficulties at an apartment building.

Police spokesman Bill Robertson said Friday investigators found needle marks on the
victim's hips and buttocks and learned from witnesses that she had been injected with a
foreign substance by a man who had left the apartment before police arrived.

"Hopefully that person will be apprehended shortly," he said. "We're looking to talk to him and bring him in and see to what extent he is involved in the incident."

Robertson would not offer a description of the man, but said he was from out of state and could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted of manslaughter.
