    -------------------

From Insider from the crapper, Chad Ford:

    HOUSTON ROCKETS

Players they might lose: Jon Barry, Dikembe Mutombo - WTF?

Players they might pursue: Marko Jaric (R), Stromile Swift, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Donyell Marshall, Reggie Evans (R), Jay Williams

Current cap position: $53.9 million ($4.4 million over the cap)

Analysis: The team is getting pretty deep in the backcourt with the addition of Luther Head in the draft (and the possibility of bringing over last year's second-round pick Vasilis Spanoulis, who had a great year in Europe), but that might not stop them from going after a point guard in free agency. They like Jaric a lot and because of his versatility could easily play him alongside Head in the backcourt.

More intriguing is their interest in Williams, who has just begun playing five-on-five. If he continues to show improvement, he could be in training camp this year. Williams' agent also represents Yao Ming, which is why there might be a connection here.

The Rockets also need more size and toughness up front. Swift is athletic and a good shot blocker. Abdur-Rahim is talented, but may be too much of a Juwan Howard duplication. Marshall is an old standby who doesn't out-jump anyone anymore, but has strung together a couple of impressive seasons of late. Evans is a beast of a rebounder, something the Rockets desperately need on their front line.

Jaric has not ever been able to go 82 games, 66 being his high, he has never shot very well, career 40% shooter, he is 6-7 and does not rebound, although that might be because his fault with Brand and such it might be a scheme issue. If he was cheap, veterans exception I am thinking, he might be worth it but I imagine he will get close to the MLE and we have better places to spend our money.

I like Jay Williams. The attitude alone is enough to think about signing him. He has the will to play and to succeed. If all he ever was on the Rockets was a practice player I would be happy with it. With Head in the mix this might not be the case. He is one of the few Duke players to come out with potential even now.

Swift. I can see the athleticism and the, well maybe if he were a starter type attitude. He misses games, not a great shooter, and just seems lost sometimes on the court. I have not seen a lot of Memphis games but the ones I have I have seen Flashes but nothing great. If we could add him for the S&T and not lose too much, I would like to keep wesley and sura for now but there are three other's at the end of the bench we can pitch. Then I am for it... adds a leaper

There are two names that I did not see on the list. Brown from Washington, who I like not sure what really happened with him in Washington but he might have hit rock bottom and be ready to go. Andersen, I am not sold on this guy at all. He has however been improving year after year so he might be worth while.

July 22nd we should know more.
