Driving in this morning, 610 was saying the Finley is seriously considering Houston as well as the Suns. I have not heard that before. Anybody else have another source to confirm this is serious or just speculation?
call me crazy but if it came down to signing walker with the MLE or finley, i chose walker. does anyone with a recap know if they talked about how much $ finley is looking to sign for?
They said Finley will sign with somebody for the MLE and speculated it would be for 3 years. I tend to agree. I'd go for the 28 year old Walker over the 33 year old Finley.
I'de go for both. If we somehow can sell them both on coming here we'de instantly become a top 3 team in the nba. I've always loved Finley's quickness and 3 point shot. Although Dallas relied on him too much as a go to second guy Finley on our team as a role player would be just awesome. He is pretty streaky from beyond the arc but when he's on fire he's on fire. I think if we land him he would probably have a role like say an Eddie Jones for the Heat. He could be perfect replacement in the starting line up for Wesley. Has definitely more size and won't easily get posted up on the block by bigger guards. Van Gundy would use him to take slack off of Mcgrady defensively. I think he makes a perfect fit for us.
If he wants the MLE, I think that rules out Phoenix, who used most of theirs on Raja Bell I believe. Houston shouldn't use the MLE on Finley either. Cap gurus can maybe answer this ... but if a player is "bought out" under this amnesty rule, getting all the remaining money on his contract, and he then signs with another team, does that player's new salary come OFF the buyout amount, or is it just gravy for the player (in addition)? If it comes off the buyout amount, then there should be no incentive for Finley to get "more". He could sign with any team for the vet minimum and it would make no difference to him. If it does not come off the buyout amount, then I'm sure Finley is like any other player in this league (greedy) and will go for the max he can get.
last time that question was asked, it was either NIKE or GATER that said they couldnt answer that until the full text of the CBA is released... IF it does come out of the original salary..then theoretically, players like Finley who are still making the money from their original team might be inclined to sign with a team for a reduced amoiunt if other factors are important to them....like maybe staying close the area they have been for the last however many years, and payig no income tax to play on a contender that needs their services. things that make you go hmmm...
Top 3 in the league? Sounds like a stretch to me. Consider that Dallas had both of them plus Nash, Nowitski and Jamison for the 2003-04 season and only had the 3rd best record in the MidWest Divison. Dirk may have been injured but the 03-04 Mavs went out in the 1st round 1-4. At this point in his career, Finley is not fast enough as a perimeter defender to keep quicker guards from getting past him and getting unnecessary fouls on Yao. Simmons is a much better option. I don't care at all for Cuttino's game, but would find him preferable to Finley as well.
GATER is spot on. I like Finley but he has lost a step defensively on the perimeter. If he wanted to come here for the LLE and be the backup SG/SF I would take a look. But I wouldnt use the MLE on Finley. I would put ALL of my efforts to get 25 year old Bobby Simmons. That's the kind of player we need to target to be a "core player" to grow with Yao and Tmac. (see my signature).
I believe that under this rule, the player gets to double dip (get paid by two teams) if that is the case, then I would NOT want Finley - he is a 33 year old eating up your cap space (while still getting paid by the mavs)
Finley for the MLE? No thanks, I'd rather spend it on someone that can contribute for years to come. Finley for the LLE? Sure, he is still a vet guard that can shoot the ball pretty well. I think he would be our Wesley but w/ less defensive quickness but stronger and more athletic.
I'd take him off the bench at the LLE for 18 minutes a game behind TMac and our starting 2. You're right. He isn't the defensive stopper we need now.
but how would you know that since not even two of the guys I most trust on things like this dont even know?(at least they didnt last time I saw the question asked) DId you see it in a article or something? Not being sh*tty with you..I honestly want to know. are you just speculating? FInley for the LLE would be a ok pickup...he still has a little D left, and can still hit a few shots...Im not sure I would want him starting...but as a backup, I could see it.
Rockets2K: I am the one who asked the question and NIKE was the one who answered. The answer is we don't know for sure until the new CBA is released. Nobody is talking very much about it officially, so one of Clutch's two scenarios will be the answer when it comes.
Did yall forget the way Finley played during the playoffs. The guy's shot is just about gone, and he's clearly past his prime. He was pretty much a non-factor against Houston, save for the infamous out of bounds steal. It doesn't make much sense to get him now, as Yao and TMac are much younger. We need guys who can grow with them.
I have had it confirmed that players CAN double dip. The question for a 32 year old Finley who will be 33 in March is whether he goes for a the maximum amount of money or does he go somewhere he has a chance to compete for a title AND get an opportunity to stick it to the Mavs. Now, of course that leaves the PF spot as a major hole if you sign Finley, but that doesn't mean that the Rockets have no chance of getting a PF via trade (although it probably wouldn't be much).
if that is truely the case...then I stick with what I said before...veterans exception or nothing...I dont like him enough to want to pay him anymore than that...especially if it inhibits our ability to get a "real" need...PF
i was wondering, since both Walker and Finley are from the Chicago area, u think there is a fat chance of both of them coming here to split the MLE? Its a stretch, but they may pull a Malone/Payton move to play with us....... I would still like to kick Finley's ass for his out of bounds play, but thats mostly on the refs.
Clutch, We were discussing this exact question 3 or 4 days ago, and Nike came to the conclusion that he'd have to see the text in the agreement. We've been waiting patiently He mentioned that Mutombo was bought out and received his next contract in addition to the buyout amount, but since this is a one-time thing, it's possible that they have another set of guidelines for it. Start here and work your way down for a summary: http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=98305&p=1902849 It's an excellent question and has HUGE ramifications on all players waived by it. Any updates Nike?
guess you didnt see this...Im not saying take this as gospel...but the morning show guys do have the resources to find out things like this.
