I actually liked The Last Samurai. I guess I didnt take it so seriously. I guess I could see where it would upset some people but who really cares. At least it wasnt another remake.
Blah blah blah... What about the fact that he was the only one to survive the big battle? He was at the very front of the charge against the enemy, but manages to survive. Everybody else but him dies. I can't believe there are people who are actually defending that piece of crap movie. Amazing.
Ever watch Rambo or any other action movie? There are a million movies that have the same thing in it but no one complains. Movies dont always have to make complete sense for them to be good. Also, someone has to survive a war because not everyone dies.
well you see, it's this thing called a movie. and sometimes things that wouldn't happen in real life happen in it. often times guys are missed by thousands of bullets b/c they're the main character and they kinda have to survive. and it would be stupid if he wasn't the last samurai. you want some dork from the village who was only on screen for a few seconds to be the last. or maybe they could just all die and they could call it "no more samurai." and the movie got 3 stars on the digital tv guide and i've found that to be an excellent barometer for movies over the few years i've had digital cable. also got a nice user rating at imdb and i believe was generally well liked by critics (though it didn't do amazingly well at the box office, only getting to about $110M or so). obviously anyone can choose to hate or love a movie but i don't know why y'all act like it was crap. y'all would seem to be in the minority.
I agree. The people that say that usually did not see the movie or went in thinking that so they didn't like it from the beginning. I've liked quite a bit of his movies. I can't think of one that I didn't at least enjoy. Maybe the couple I didn't see were bad............I don't know.
From talking to folks in real life about this movie, the only guys (all of them white, what a shock) I knew who liked that movie were guys who did not understand the concept of racial equality. I'll let you figure out what that means.
I like his movies even though he's going bonkers as of late. But the one thing that bothers me is that he does not DIE in any of his movies. Like the dude must have a "No Death" clause in his movie contracts. Sure he's the main attraction in his movies but c'mon....at least cripple the guy or something. I can only think of a couple of movies where he dies. But for example: POSSIBLE SPOILERS!!!!!! Top Gun: Ok so THEORETICALLY it makes sense that Goose dies since he's the wingman and he basically slammed right into the cockpit window. But Maverick comes away unscathed...at least have him hobble around for a bit. Vanilla Sky: Resurrection #1. I like this movie too. But Hollywood goes further and messes with our head. Is he alive? Is he dead? Is he alive? Then we find out that he's been dead for a while and *wait* he wakes up and lives.... Minority Report: Resurrection #2. He basically does his hero work and towards the end of the movie he DOES get captured, DOES get his mind turned into a spud, but then *BOOM*, he's back up and ready to kick some ass. The Last Samurai: Resurrection #3. I really liked this movie, except I have a different ending to this movie ETCHED into my head. Ending scene: no one survives from the samurai army EVEN Cruise. But oh no, it's Tom Cruise! He survives while having been shot down like an uncredited X-Wing fighter. War of the Worlds: it's actually a surprise in this movie (I won't go any further for the sake of the ones that haven't seen it) I mean I like his movies. I think he's a terrific actor and picks his roles really well. But sometimes I just want him to just stay down and die. I think that's what made me love Collateral. But then it's like...c'mon....Jamie Foxx killed Tom Cruise how anticlimatic. Basically, if the Terminator can die, so can Tom Cruise.
When did the Terminator die? Please don't say part one, two or three, especially not three because I haven't seen part four yet.
Eyes Wide Shut-- One of the best movies I have ever seen, so how can I not like the guy that is the star??
i just saw this recently on hbo, and i knew he had to die, but i wanted vincent to stay alive and kill everyone he was supposed to kill. i loved his character. when i've rewatched it, i pretty much stop after he takes care of business at the club b/c it sucks that he loses in the end. i love when the thief takes his bag from the cab, after he walks out and says "yo homie, is that my briefcase" and guns them down, how he just calmly shoots the guy the third time after he gets his briefcase and starts to walk back. "am i good?"
I don't hate tom cruise. Don't care about the stuff he does off camera, other than to maybe laugh at it. He's been in a lot of good movies, but I don't think that means he's a great actor. He's a good actor who knows what movies to pick. Cruise isn't a draw for me, that's for sure. But I'm not going to downgrade a movie just because he's in it either. oh, and last samurai was horrible.
Don't care much for Cruise but he has been in some good movies. I always ending thinking, the movie would have been much better with a different actor. Kinda like Keanu Reeves in Speed and Matrix. Tom just happens to get all the good parts.
Like his movies OK... of course, he was pretty hot in most of them. I may have enjoyed Eyes Wide Shut largely because he looked so good... (this does not mean I would touch him with a ten-foot pole; I wouldn't. The only person crazier than him has to be Katie, for getting into all this.)
Never seen most of these, but of the ones I saw... # Collateral (2004) .... Vincent ---- Didn't love the movie, but really liked Tom Cruise actually # The Last Samurai (2003) .... Nathan Algren ---- Eh... pretty good, woulda been far better had he actually died in that last charge # Minority Report (2002) .... Chief John Anderton --- Good one # Mission: Impossible II (2000) .... Ethan Hunt ---- Another good one # Mission: Impossible (1996) .... Ethan Hunt ---- Eh # A Few Good Men (1992) .... Lt. Daniel Kaffee --- Oh hell yes # Top Gun (1986) .... Lt. Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell --- Good one # Legend (1985) .... Jack --- Terrible movie, but I love it anyway, mostly because of Tim Curry # The Outsiders (1983) .... Steve Randle --- Eh So yeah, I don't think I've seen I single flick with him in it that I didn't enjoy at least slightly. I'm not his biggest fan, but he's done some good work... to me Collateral proved he had a bit more range than I gave him credit for. Yeah, I kinda agree with that. Honestly though, I gotta give him at least a little credit. I thought he was excellent in Collateral and A Few Good Men, and above average in Top Gun. But yeah, I often feel someone else would have played his role better.
I'd have to say he's actually pretty underrated as an actor. Not that he's the best out there, but let's give credit where it's due. Take for example his performance in Rain Man - sure Dustin Hoffman got all the attention, but it was Cruise that gave the film its emotional anchor. You also have to admire the range of roles he's chosen to play, his ability to pick good projects (except for Eyes Wide Shut - not smart, and it took him out of action for 2-3 years during filming), and his staying power (does anyone remember Kevin Costner?). And since when does the main star have to die for an action film to be credible? How many times have you seen a Clint Eastwood character bite the dust? Bruce Willis? George Clooney? I don't see people complaining about The Great Escape or calling it anti-British because all the British leads are shot at the end but Steve McQueen lives. As for controversies in his personal life - I must admit I have no clue what that is about, other than apparently some annoying appearances on talk shows.
Last Samurai sucked for the same reasons stated above, but I watched Collateral and I think he made up with the character *vincent* its just too bad he had to get shot by Jamie Foxx... I think basically he picks good roles, but he is a tool.
I'm 100% Asian. I liked The Last Samurai. It wasn't a typical Hollywood movie, except for the ending. Letting Tom Cruise live wasn't racism to me, but more of a Hollywood big studio thing. He had to live and deliver that speech in the end. Other than that, it was a really good movie. I'm don't typically like Hollywood action flicks either. Also, Seven Samurai was excellent (just another Samurai movie that popped into mind). As for Collateral, it was uneven for me. Heat is my favorite movie of all time, so I do like Michael Mann a lot and was expecting so much from Collateral. It was quality, and the character development was good. Heat had some cheesy lines, but also some of the greatest movie scenes of all time (the post bank robberty shootout and Al Pacino and Robert DiNero having coffee). Collateral had great action, good dialogue, but slowed too much at times to almost a bore. Again, Collateral, imo, is 100times better than any typical Hollywood action flick, but I guess I was wanting perfection. *Spoiler* Collateral's ending didn't upset me. It was 2 people firing in the dark into glass. That's a better way of Tom Cruise dying than having Jamie Fox outsmart him to get the best shot, because Tom Cruise was a professional and that wouldn't have made sense. If Cruise had to die and Fox live, than having a mad and wounded Cruise march up in the subway car like that and Fox and him firing at eachother was the best way. The movie was very Micheal Mann, but could not match his Heat masterpiece.
I agree - should have been an option "like his movies but not really him". "Jerry Maguire", "Rainman", "A Few Good Men", and "Eyes Wide Shut" would probably rank in my top 40 of favorite movies of all-time. And to those who say that Cruise needs to die in at least one movie - "Eyes Wide Shut" was the perfect movie for that to happen. Yet he didn't, so I am thinking that there is some kind of "no death clause" the dude has for all of his movies, lol.
DUDE that is what I'm saying!!!! In some of his movies, he should have died. But he goes against ALLLLL possible odds to come back for another 5-10 minutes. Last Samurai and Vanilla Sky would have been at least 5x better if he would have kicked the bucket. It's like if Tyler Durden gets shot in Fight Club, only to come back again 3 minutes later.
