I saw The Cult on Sunday night at Stubb's, they rocked. The new Toadies album rocks too. They're also playing Austin this coming Sunday night. Did you see them at Stubb's? Weren't the Supersuckers on that bill too?
I'm glad you had fun, and actually got in to a few clubs to see some music. I went to the first two SXSWs, in the early 80s. They were enjoyable & served a purpose back then, but IMHO, the present-day version of SXSW is nothing more than an excuse for record executives to get an expense-paid trip to Austin to get wasted for four straight days. It's become kind of a joke, just like the Austin music "scene" has. Just my opinion (and we know what opinions are like, don't we!)... ------------------ "Blues is a Healer" --John Lee Hooker
how were the toadies? i went to their release party over in ft. worth monday night (they played a free, acoustic gig at a w**** music venue of some kind). cool set (they played the MF'ing pixies!), and the album, while maybe not worth the seven year wait, is well worth picking up. i was fortunate enough to attend school in dallas in the early 90's, and be a part of a legitimate (as opposed to corporate-created) seattle-style music scene, in which, it seemed like, new, great bands were popping up everyday: tripping daisy, the toadies, rev. horton heat, slobberbone... good times (not that i remember a lot of them). also, did you get a chance to catch a listen to the new radiohead album? it supposedly was played on three different occasions. ------------------ Ric http://www.houstonprofootball.com
Ric@HPF did you ever see a band from Dallas called Ten Hands? I saw them twice in the early 90s in Houston @ Fitz. They were amazing! I always wondered what happened to them. ------------------ Everything you do, effects everything that is.
I saw the Toadies at Stubb's when it was cold and rainy The Supersuckers opened up for them, and I have to say they rocked ass, but unfortunately all there songs started to sound the same not to mention that the songs were 2 minutes long.....They played well over there set length which pissed me off because I was ready to see the Toadies.... That was one of the best Toadies shows I have seen in a long while! They played most of the Rubberneck tunes, and there new stuff sounds great!!! Todd Lewis was telling the audience that the new album was coming out Tuesday March 20th. Some guy in the crowd said "Its about fu#$in' time!!!" (toadies last full length album was released in 1994). Todd just laughed and replied "Fuc#*in' A" Great set....NO ENCORE....I was pissed.....Im going to the show at La Zona Rosa this Sunday the 25th... FYI.....Wendy's makes the worst fries EVER
oh sure -- they're from denton, but long since deceased (4, 5 years ago). if not mistaken, dave abbruzzese was once in the band (as was just about everyone else -- they were kind of legendary for changing members). they were kinda soul/funk rock fusion kinda thing, right? cut from the brave combo mold? i never really got into that, but it was big back then. ------------------ Ric http://www.houstonprofootball.com
they seemed in good spirits monday night, too. it was just an acoustic set, but the looks on their faces as their songs were being sung back to them... they seemed genuinely surprised and humbled, and that was cool. i hope the new album takes off. it has 3 or 4 radio-made songs ready to go on it, and doesn't quite sound like anything out there right now (more a shot at the homogenized music scene than it is a nod to the toadies blazing some kind of original path). ------------------ Ric http://www.houstonprofootball.com
Oh yeah! I remember being really impressed at how tight they were. They could really make a crowd move! ------------------ Everything you do, effects everything that is.
Ten Hands!!! One of my all time favs. They were indeed from Denton. They all met at North Texas. The original drummer is Earl Harvin. He toured with Seal and Roy Hargrove. Last I saw, he was touring with Oleta Adams, but that may have changed. He is a MONSTER drummer. I have no idea where his replacement (I forget his name) in Ten Hands went after their break up. The singer and Chapman Stick player (bass, sort of) are now playing in a band called Green Romance Orchestra with Dave Abruzzese, the drummer who toured with Pearl Jam on their first album and played on their second. Dave is from Houston via Beaumont. The drummer who played on the first Pearl Jam album is Matt Chambers, former Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians and Saturday Night Live drummer, but he did not tour with the band. He is now playing with Chris Cornell and a few others. The singer also did a solo piano album a number of years ago independantly. I don't know what happened to the guitarist. I have three of their CD's including a live early one that is killer. My friend has a bootleg of them from Fitzgerald's here that was broadcast on Z107 at the time and a VERY early demo with 5 songs. I must've seen them 50 or 60 times in the span of 3 or 4 years in Austin and Houston. I always loved them. Thanks for bringing them up! You can get some more info below: The Ten Hands Unofficial Website Free Association Records - Dave Abruzzese Enjoy! ------------------ "I swallowed a lot of agression...along with a lot of pizzas."
actually, dave krusen was the drummer on PJ's first album, and he toured with them BRIEFLY (for, like a year, when they were still mookie blaylock). chamberlin played a few dates the summer leading up to the release of TEN. abruzzese joined the band just as TEN was being released, and played on their third record as well before receiving the boot. three drummers before the release of your first record? somewhere john "stumpy" pepys is smiling... ------------------ Ric http://www.houstonprofootball.com
That's what is says on the record, but it was actually Chamberlin. Session drummers frequently get called in to do records and not take credit because they get paid more. Brenden O'Brien, the producer, worked with Chamberlin on other projects and recruited him because Krusen wasn't giving him what he wanted. Krusen played with them a bit, but if memory serves, like many in Seattle at the time, he was forced to take a leave of absence for heroin addiction. Chamberlin was a natural fit because he did the record. Ironically, this happens quite often in music, especially in the case of older drummers who cannot perform up to a high level any longer. The best example of this in recent memory that has some fame attached to it is the Eagles Greatest Hits thing with that one new song "Get Over It" (is that right?) on it. The album credits Don Henley with drums but it was actually a friend of mine who lives here in Houston that played on it. He was called in (secretly) when Henley couldn't play the tracks well enough. He's done numerous "subs" for people like this. Anyway, no biggie. Carry on. ------------------ "I swallowed a lot of agression...along with a lot of pizzas."
actually, we're both right. it's been so long, i had to actually look it up. here's the deal (for those who care): within a week of meeting/forming, they had written and recorded what is, essentially, TEN. in may, krusen left the band, paving the way for chamberlin (who, btw, hooked PJ up with abbruzzese when he left two months later). shortly thereafter, they remixed TEN in england, where, it's likely (tho never officially documented), chamberlin pitched in with pick-ups and possible re-do's. regardless -- abbruzzese was NEVER in ten hands, but a band called dr. tongue (which eddie references during the '93 denton show -- i als went back and checked that.) dr. tongue was pre-my denton experience. ------------------ Ric Houston Pro Football.com
Good job finding the details, Ric. Thanks. ------------------ "I swallowed a lot of agression...along with a lot of pizzas."
