You make the call - will he make more on the market while competing with the likes of Ray Allen, Michael Redd, Joe Johnson, Larry Hughes, Bobby Simmons, and more? Is the chance to get a longer contract worth the risk? Maybe the opportunity to join a contender? Or did he just majorly f-up? link Evan
I don't know if his next contract will start any higher than $6.4 million, but it's definitely smarter to take a long term contract over a short one. I'm guessing he'll take someone's MLE, so he'll lose only $1.5 in his first year -- something that he'll make back with the annual raises. It won't sound too smart to take the option only to tear an acl and sign for the minimum a year from now.
I've been over this before, but with 30 teams that can offer MLE type money, Cat will most certainly get at least that much. That works out to a 5 year 30+ million dollar deal. And a guaranteed 30 million > 6.4 million.
I dont think the Cat is really after more than 6.4 mill a year but rather a long contract. He wants to make sure he gets a garanteed contract for $6 mill a year so he can feed his family and not worry about getting injured & no1 wanting him.
Sort of. 5, 5.4, 5.8, 6.3, 6.8 So he'd be taking a paycut with the MLE to start off with. Which, IMO, is probably a little less than he's really worth. Why not take the 6+ this season, and make a run for a new contract next year with less competition? Evan
Cat may well be lucky to get the full MLE. However, if he does and signs here, for example, tax implications = raise from california. The man needs, I mean NEEDS an SnT! Cat & KT for Wes & Mooch, anyone?
This poll is kind of set up funny. The title ask one question while the poll asks another. Similar but different questions. M_cable has it right. This move is all about getting a long-term deal while he is playing good. Who knows what injury he could get next year. Too much of a risk.
Because then he's gambling that everything goes right. Maybe it does, but like an above poster suggested, what if he tears an ACL and can't get better than the veteran minimum? No. 30 million dollars garaunteed definitely does own 6.4 million this year. Is that really that hard for you to understand?
I believe the Clippers and Denver have contacted Mobley about his services. Perhaps Mobley is "plan B" for the Clippers if they dont get Ray Allen. And Denver is looking for a shooter so clearly Mobley is in the mix there. Denver is also reportedly looking at Marko Jaric.
Hey Nugs, what do you think about your team if they get Simmons? So far, it just seems like the Nuggets is a team where "the sum of the parts is greater than the whole". It just doesn't seem like their pieces are fitting perfectly. Granted, they got a good player at almost every position, but it just doesn't seem like it's meshing. Thoughts?
I don't think Cat cares about the money, he probably just wants to win at this point. He's only tasted the post-season 3 times (twice with us, once with Sac) and failed to advance everytime. He probably just wants to win, he's never really been about the money---he took a paycut to stay with us once, maybe he's considering doing it again? For a defensive player and shooter like Cat, I sure would welcome & embrace it.
I'm not Nuggets4, but I'd like to point out that they sure started meshing late in the season under Karl.... That said, they didn't look like the same team after we whooped up on 'em late in the season
