Here's the part I'm referring to: A lot of what the Mavericks are doing now is with an eye on the immediate future. Tim Duncan , the San Antonio Spurs' All-Star center, becomes a free agent after the 2002-03 season, and the Mavericks would love to have enough room under the salary cap to pursue him. By then, Juwan Howard will be a free agent after earning $20 million in the '02-03 season. As of now, Nash, Eisley and Finley are the only Mavericks under contract for the '03-04 season, with the team holding an option on Donnell Harvey's contract. ------------------ A man convinced against his will, is of the same opinion still.
I'm not sure how it will all shake out, but Nowitzki is going to get a nice fat extension next summer and that should absorb some of that cap space rather quickly, especially with Finley's max deal and Nash, plus whoever else they pick up along the way before 2003. ------------------ It's a cool site, this clutchcity.net
Webber has proved that the only way to get max free agents is through trade. The extra 30 mil obtained by signing with your own team is just too much to pass up.
I was listening to the radio coverage of the Michael Finley signing press conference and afterward there was an interveiw with one of the Mavs PR people and he brought up this very same point when a question was asked about Duncan in free agency in two years. Dirk will be maxed out and Nash will be close to max so even with Howards contract expiring they don't think that they will be all that far under the cap. ------------------
