http://www.nbadraft.net/profiles/lutherhead.asp this guy actully sounds intriguing. only noticed him cuz hes in a mock draft picked by rox. sounds like his only real problem is shot selection. but thats a problem that can be beaten out of him.
The question with Head is if he can play the point. He didn't do a lot of ballhandling at Illinois, but with Williams and Brown also on the team you couldn't really expect him to. If he's exclusively a two, I'll pass... but if he's capable of playing both SG and PG, he's my personal favorite for the pick. His defense and fundamentals are rock solid... and he's almost like a smaller version of Richard Hamilton in how frequently he moves without the ball. He also wanted the big shots in the biggest of games... he thrives on the pressure moments. He has the right mentality in addition to his shooting and athleticism. Even with all that said, if he's a two, he'll end up as a dime-a-dozen Tony Delk clone who isn't capable of holding his own on defense against bigger twos. But, if we're thoroughly convinced he's enough of a ballhandler to play some point, I think he has the athleticism, fundamentals and overall offensive play to be a good fit here. He also has the maturity and college experience to contribute sooner than almost anyone else late in the first, imo.
he'll probably have to play PG and i'm a firm believer that you just can't pick up NBA PG skills without playing the position in college or proffesionally overseas. it's a difficult position to learn at the highest level. intriguing player but probably won't be worth a 1st round pick.
Really? Most mocks I've seen have him early second or late first, but generally at or behind our pick. He seems the type to be overlooked a little with his height. I think he's deserving of a higher pick if he can play the point, but I'd be a little surprised if he's off the board. Also, for the post concerning PG experience, remember that Gilbert Arenas didn't play much point at Arizona either. Generally, I agree with the concept of needing prior point experience to run it with the defensive ball pressure of the NBA, and I think Arenas is the exception to the rule. But it does show that there are exceptions from time to time.
Wouldn't Luther Head be a bit redundant here with David Wesley and Mike James? If the Rockets are going to get a shooting guard, I'd much rather they get a tall lengthy 2-guard with playmaking skills like Garcia or Hodge. Not another undersized gunner.
Head is a much better shooter than Hodge and a much better ball handler than Garcia I have heard he could play some point - a la Arenas - ... I also wonder if he might be a good pickup...
Luther Head at #24 would be another Rockets draft day f*ck up. Especially when guys like Garcia, Simien, Diogu, and Hodge could potentially be on the board. Don't be surprised if we pick up another bum like Head who will be off the team in 1 year.
yes, a guy (who is one of the best at the pre-draft camps) that plays for the number 2 team in the country and scores 21 points (with 5 threes) in the NCAA finals against the number 1 team in the country ... is garbage if you are talking about his character, I have heard he has some issues - but the guy can ball
For next year, definitely. But if we're looking down the road and not expecting the pick to make an impact for a year or two (as CD has said), there are concerns about Sura's durability, James' resign-ability and the age of Wesley and Barry. He could fit here. Fwiw, I think he's better at creating his own shot off the dribble than Garcia and has a lot more range than Hodge. Of course, if he has to play the two then he'll be undersized and his ability to create shots will be negated by the increased size of his defenders. Like I said earlier, it depends on whether we think he can play the point.
I would have no problem taking Head at 24. We need a guy who can shoot, defend, and create shots for others by attacking the rim. We know Head can shoot, and I think they were saying that he was Illinois' best perimeter defender. He could easily chase guys around screens for us, letting Tmac guard the more stationary players. His good assist numbers are also encouraging. At the predraft camp he showed that he was more athletic than many thought. He could basically be a David Wesley player for us, only much younger, athletic, and 3 inches taller. Potentially a Mobley type of player, but hopefully less of a ball-stopper. Might be kind of a reach, but he'd be fine with me, depending on which other guys slide, of course.
thing with arenas though is that he still handled the ball. head never did with brown and williams. i just don't think he's what we need but he could make a decent pick for someone with a tall PG and he could play the 2.
From the time I saw Luther Head play in College, he does have a nice handle, and are fundamentally sound player. The only reason these mock draft have him down is because the perceived "potential" of a player is more important to GMs.
I sure as hell hope so. This could be another Bryce Drew type throw away pick if it's true. But, leave it to the Rockets' brass to f*ck up another draft and pick an undersized 2 guard.
I don't know if he can play the point at the NBA level (which is quite a bit more than running the point for a college team), but I really like Luther Head as a player. He's got athleticism, shooting range, and he's not afraid of the big shot or of taking it the hole. He was listed at 6'3" in college, which probably means he measures at 6'2" at the MOST. I agree that he'll need to play the point in the league in order to have a future.
