Drive: EMPREX DVDRW1116IM 16X Double Layer 8.5GB DVD+/-RW Drive http://www.emprex.com/02_products_02.php?id=68 Fry's has this drive on sale (or maybe its a regual price) for $49.99 Personally, I have never heard of Emprex before. A few people I talked to who own drives made by Emprex say that they never had problems. However the reviews that I read online are mixed, some people report problems while others say that the drive works flawlessly. Also it seems that Emprex and BTC is the same thing. Has anyone heard of and used this drive? Are there any known problems with this product and/or reason why not to purchase it? I plan on getting this drive and using it as an external burner by plugging it into a Bytec 5.25" external enclosure via USB 2.0 Just wanted some reviews of this drive before I go and buy it. Thanks in advance.
That's a normal price. Check out these deals at Newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...alue=365:6653&maxprice=60&bop=and&order=PRICE
I didnt think that was really a sale also. I am more concerned about the quality and the performance of the drive. I was looking at Newegg and I have bought tons of products from them in the past but I wanted to purchase the drive from a local store this time mostly because I am not going to be paying for it and I want to receive it quickly and be able to exchange/return it (if needed) quickly also.
I bought a BenQ 1620 from New Egg, and I love it so far. It was delivered within 2 business days. I don't know anything about Emperex, other than it's another cheap brand. BenQ was a guess for me too, or perhaps a gamble...but it's been great so far.
I did a search on Video help, and found that people didn't have a good time burning with this dvd burner. http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia.p...&searchdvdplayer=&search=Search+or+List+Media These are the tests with the cheap burner I bought from NEWEGG.com http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia.p...&searchdvdplayer=&search=Search+or+List+Media
This better matches the model of the drive that I am inquiring about. The one I am looking at is the newer model of this version: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia.p...&searchdvdplayer=&search=Search+or+List+Media Most of the results are Good. Some are mixed. Very few poor. I also found some posts from some people who have actually used the same model I am looking at and they say that it uses a Lite-On chipset
Also, the reviews in these links rate the actual media used more than the drive itself. Ooops, I meant to edit the last message, not reply to it
I couldn't find any reviews for the drive itself, but the links show their compatibility with the DVD R/-R media etc.
i have that same drive, got it from frys about 4 or 5 months ago. i've probably burned close to 300 dvds and haven't had too many problems, probably only 5 or so wasted dvds. for the money its a great deal but there's always the chance i got a lucky one. you never know with these cheapo brands but i recommend it.
I've had this since last Dec, after XMas sale ($40), and have NO issues Hell, the one i had before this was an Emprex 4x Dual format burner and had no problems with it. I made my external with an external enclosure USB 2.0, hooked it up to my laptop, and had no problems. Ive even used the cheap Platinum/Bencole/Windata blanks I buy at Micro Cetner (8x 50pk $15) with no issues.
Well I got that drive and hooked it up to an external enclosure that uses USB 2.0. Works fine so far. I burned 2 DVD's without any problems using the Maxell 1-8X DVD+R discs. The first movie I burned the speed was 4x and it took about 13 minutes. The second movie I set the speed to 8x and it burned in about 7 minutes. No problems with either movie. One thing I noticed is that these drives come with outdated firmware. However the Liveupdate utilitiy from drvupdate.com solves that issue rather quickly. So if you are having problems with any of your drives check out http://www.drvupdate.com/
