Just wondering if anyone had been listening to any good new bands or recently discovered any. Muse Really weird and interesting band that is a combination of Radiohead, Queen, NIN and a prog rock band from the 80's. Great singer and amazing musicianship. They ROCK. The Weakerthans Good solid college-ish alt band. Good hooks overall. Snow Patrol I know lots of people know about them, but I just began listening. Cool stuff. Keane Another one that has gotten some attention. Good hooks. The Juliana Theory Totally reminds me of an 80's hard rock band mixed with modern alt.rock. I like them quite a bit.
I posted about them about a year ago. Discovered them about two years ago. An acquired taste, but interesting nonetheless. Huge departure from the guitarist/singer's previous membership in the uber political punk band Propagandhi.
I saw this dude last night opening for Graham Colton at Stubb's in Austin. His name is Adam Richman. Really dug his stuff quite a bit- somewhat pop with a hard edge. Very catchy. Might have to order one of his cd's online- wasn't able to find it at Best Buy today.
I have heard of Keane and Snow Patrol as they have some Brit-Pop influences. I will probably get the Keane album but I don't know about Snow Patrol. And it seems like I have heard of Muse before but I am not 100% sure. One band that I have to get is Arcade Fire as their album "Funeral" has been constantly recommended to me by Amazon because of my purchasing of Franz Ferdinand and Interpol. Other than Arcade Fire, the rest of the bands I have been trying out are old ones, mostly progressive in Camel, Spock's Beard (fantastic band), Porcupine Tree, Gentle Giant, and Can. The last group, in particular, is a fascinating band. If you like weirdo, dissonant, and avant-garde type of music, then Can is the band for you, lol.
I just discovered a few in the last couple weeks - thank you MP3 blogers! The Mountain Goats I bought "The Sunset Tree" and liked it so much I went back and bought a few of their (his) older albums. I got the titles of the better older ones from the good old search fuction here. Thanks Manny for those "What's In Your CD" threads, they contained a wealth of information. The Ditty Bops Very eclectic mix of older styles, Jazz and Western Swing. They played SXSW and will play ACL later this year. Absynthe Minded A Belgian group. Very poppy sounding tunes that I find addicting. "Aquired Taste" is the album I bought, they have a new release I haven't heard yet. All 3 bands have samples or full mp3s on their sites, so check them out if you want.
I've been listening to Muse for a few years now and have seen them twice in concert. Trust me, they put on one HELL of a live show. You'll never forget it. My favs right now, although a couple are not too new...Stereophonics, CKY, The Decemberists and Bend Sinister (If you like The Mars Volta check these guys out.)
Good call on Can, Manny. They were awesome. I got into them by way of Stereolab, who cited them as an influence. Karutrock is wesome! I also think Jeff is on to something with Snow Patrol. They do that p***y-assed Coldplay stuff better than Coldplay ; ). I really like them. Here are some new bands/singers I love: Brendan Benson-"The Alternative to Love"- I don't say this lightly: this is a *classic* pop record. He is a pop craftsman the way Paul McCartney, Phil Spector and Brian Wilson were. This is only one album, but good God it is magnifienct. Great stuff. Kaiser Chiefs- Britpop by way of Blur rather than Radiohead. Stephen Malkmus- He's not new, he was the head person in Pavement. His new record is badass. Antony and the Johnson- Astonishing record ("I am a Bird Now"). I hear bits of Nina Simone, Nico and even late period Elvis Presley in these aching torch songs. One last note: Robert Plant's new album, "Mighty Rearranger" is one of the best albums in ages. Check it out.
Q and Not U I've mentioned this band a few times in the "What's in the cd player" threads but I don't know if anyone took notice. Used to be a foursome, now a trio. They are on Dischord Records and all 3 of their albums have been produced by Ian Mckay. I loved their first full length release, No Kill No Beep Beep (2000). Their latest full length Power(2004) is really great as well (maybe even better). Songs on No Kill No Beep Beep to check out: A Line in the Sand And the Washington Monument Blinks Goodnight Kiss Distinctly American Songs on Power to check out: Wonderful People Collect the Diamonds Book of Flags They are also one of the best live acts I've ever seen.
Manny: I have an awesome Can mix xd I made that I can copy for you unlesw you already got all the albums. It'sa prety much 120 minutes of the best songs they ever recorded.
Yea, that would be great DHB- send me an email at jfyoung@charter.net on how you want to get that to me. Thanks!
http://shotbaker.com/music.html heres some local music from up here in chi town. scroll down, the band whose website this is, shot baker, isnt really that great, but you'll see frankie rigali's song, 'sorry illinois', at the bottom. listen to it and let me know what you think. i think it's fantastic. rigali is so unbelievably talented, and this song needs to get out.
I was just at the Keane concert just two days ago. They are amazing live. Snow Patrol, on the other hand was terrible live. I saw them at Stubb's BBQ up in Austin. Their cd is a good listen though. Some bands you might like are The Futureheads and The Bravery.
I'm not normally into real heavy stuff, but I have to give my local boys 36 Crazyfists a nod. They've got some good hooks. Also, another local band called JEB has caught my ear lately. Both are on iTunes.
Yeah I really like his last album, "Lapalco". I haven't put that much time into his new one, but I like it so far. He's kind of a Jason Falkner-type. I guess the newest band I've been listening to is DANKO JONES. Balls out rock.
I saw The Juliana Theory in concert a year ago, and they were the worst band there.... I love the song "Hysteria" by Muse. I'm not really into too much of their other stuff though, for some reason.
