There may be one on Chimney rock, but this one is on Hillcroft--just north of South Main. My dad had some serious strokes in December, and he is in a skilled nursing facility near Westbury square. When I come in to see him from Pearland, I get off on Hillcroft so I can pick my mom up (she lives on W. Bellfort near Hillcroft). I bet I've been at O'Frenchy's a half dozen times in the past few months. I'm sure as hell not going to lose any weight going there, but fried chicken is my favorite food in the world (if done right), and this one is pretty damn good.
Damn shame, too. I used to love the country fried steak (double order) with beans, potatos, and rolls. Those rolls were awesome. So soft and buttery. GOD, I miss Grandys.
They still have Grandy's up in Austin. Planned to stop there at some point this past weekend but never got around to it.
Grandy's was great because it was the first place I knew that let you walk up and get as much Coke as you wanted. I bet kids these days don't know that refills used to cost ya. And yeah the rolls were great too. There was one in Clear Lake that opened in the early '80s but it went to crap and closed about a year ago. Can any Lakers here name what the Grandy's in Clear Lake was before it was Grandy's?
RIET's 6 degrees of separation. 1. I went to college with the girl whose family owns Timmy Chan's. 2. My former boss's husband and his family owns Frenchy's. 3. A former co-worker's family owns Church's franchises in Mexico.
I remember I used to eat at Grandy's in college. They used to have all you can eat chicken/chicken fried steak or something there. I swear we could never get past 2 plates because there was slimfast in their gravy. You'd eat a few bites and your stomach would swell... the gravy was kinda gritty, too. Slim Fast I tell you. So are there no more Grandy's in Houston?
Churches sells chicken on steroids, no thanks If I have to eat fried chicken, it is defintely going to be Popeyes. They have by FAR the best side dishes AND those buttery biscuits (yum!), and their spicy chicken is better than KFC's or Churchs. However, I have always loved KFC chicken overseas, but not in the states...can't really explain it, it just tastes better for some reason
I picked up lunch today from Old Frenchy's. On a scale of ghettoness, 1-10, 10 being high, I give it a 9. If it didn't have a drive thru and someone other than me ordering, I would not have tried it. I have never seen a fast food place with bullet proof glass separating the employees from the customers. Does it have A/C inside? Now to the food. The place has a large menu...chicken, seafood, and Asian food. I went with a chicken combo. The batter is good. It was not oily. The fries had some kind of seasoning...made them taste good. Overall, if it's on your way try it. If not, take a pass.
not sure if it's a taste of houston, but damn... those biscuits where "gooder than a muth". i remember my grandad would drop off my cousins at astroworld almost every single day during the summers since we had season passes. anyway, that had a popeyes there (not sure if they still do). we used to go there all the time and just buy biscuits. the workers just kept looking at us like we were poor ghetto children or something. like i said, i don't know if it's still there or not (haven't gone there since 15 or 16 as my first job cleaning bathrooms). glad i live only two minutes driving distance from one. i guess it's dinner tonight.
