I'm hoping there is an auto mechanic out there that can help me. I have my parents 97 Chevy S10 which has a dealership installed alarm system. We havent used the alarm in years, and don't even have a working remote for it. The battery died on this truck yesterday, so I put in a new one today. During the installation the alarm went off a few times, and now it appears the started is disabled because of the alarm. The headlights and everything work now, but the starter won't even crank because the alarm has shut it off. There is a button and a switch under the sterring column, but so far I haven't found a combination that would re-enable the starter. Any ideas out there on how to correct this? I have the truck sitting in a parking lot and all of the Chevy service departments are closed today so I can't get any help there.

Try pressing the brake pedal while turning the key. I think that's the kill switch for those. If not, I'll try harder to remember.

Thanks DT, I'll go up there and give it a shot.....although I think I normally press down on the brake by habit when I try to startup a car. If you have any other ideas just let me know!

I know for a fact it's something ridiculously simple like that, I just can't remember the trick specifically. I've encountered that exact thing on several late nineties s10's before and when I figure it out I'm always like "Damn, why didn't I try that." At least 10 times...but I still can't remember.

Also, there's a possibility that the new battery for some reason blew the ignition fuse. I can't tell you exactly where that's located, but look under the hood in the relay box...there's a ~6"X8" black plastic cover on (I believe) the driver's side of the hood area. That just pops off and reveals your relays. Read the labels in there, I think that's where the ignition fuse would be.

But odds are it's just that factory ignition kill. You can also try taking the key out and putting it in and on to the position right before start. Leave it there for 10 seconds or so and try starting combinations like that.

Yeah, it wasn't the brake trick. Tried that multiple times with no luck. I'd heard that some require you to lock/unlock the car with the key, but that didn't help either. This sucks. Thanks for your help!

Also if your key is a replacement and doesn't have the little black square on the shaft of the key like this:

then you could've reset Chevy's PASS-key thing and it's looking for the correct chip (the little black square) and not finding it.

EDIT: I think you can reprogram that PASS-key system to match your current key if you have the little chip on it by leaving it in the on position for like 10 minutes. Not sure about that though.

I have the original keys but there is no chip on them. I don't think they put the chips on the S10's for 97.
