Thanks for letting us know about this. I'll be checking it out later this week. Does it matter what size memory card you have? (I'm not checking out the site at work.) I have the standard 32 MB and a 1 gig.

Well, you could get by on two 32 meg memory cards, but yeah, what you have is exactly what I have.

32 MB ends up being your "boot disc", and the 1 gig one is where you keep the rest of your files. I'll be making a zip file for a friend of mine where all he has to do is drag and drop the folders onto his memory card, just message me on AIM whenever you're on later and I'll send it to you too.

No need to DL that Swaploid software and go through all of those steps. Just DL the already pre-made folder/files for both of the memory stick at this site and fire it up. Just scroll down a little bit to where it said update.

I got it working! Now I just need to pick a few games and stick with them instead of trying out every single game. I hope I don't mess up my memory card doing all these swaps.

Ok so what does it do? Allow you to play emulators on it?

Yep...I got a SNES and NES emulator in my PSP right now. Its pretty good, with some slow down but you could adjust the in game setting to your preference. Its just awesome playing Chrono Trigger on the go. :)

Jus to worn the person about the MS becoming corrupted. As long as you don't go into sleep-mode while running the roms you should be ok.

You can run homebrew applications on it (yes, Emulators are included as "home brew")

There's a PSP version of DOOM out, as well as some other apps such as a calculator and a calendar. This is just the beginning. How that you can run homebrew software on the US PSP, it's going to allow hundreds of coders to start making stuff for PSP. Web Browser, DivX/XviD player, etc should be coming soon, as these I believe are the highest priority for those with PSPs.

Being able to jump into a coffee shop with free wifi and browse the web on PSP is pretty awesome. If you have Wipeout Pure, you can currently do this but it is very slow.

Yeah, I'm ALL over this.

I went out and bought a PSP as soon as I heard the news. I wanted to get one while they were still selling 1.50 firmware PSP's.

Btw, this won't work if you have upgraded the firmware on your PSP to 1.51 or 1.52. My grandma used to say don't fix it if it ain't broke, and in this case you don't want to fix it because it's broke.

I can't wait until they have MAME working with a bunch of games - only a few work right now I think.

Apparently some guys are working on a firmware reversion back to 1.0 so you won't have to do the memory card swaploit. Of course, the downside of this might be that you can't watch region 1 umds - but that's not really what I got a PSP for. Now converting my Naruto collection and watching it on my PSP would be cool.

I wonder if they'll ever have a flash player?

A flash player would be great! I'd actually be able to make games for my PSP, and movies would be much smaller in swf format compared to MP4.

Sorry for bringing this back up, but I've been a little busy this week (UT orientation). It turns out that this along with a great article with specific details on the X360's GPU were some things I had to update myself on today.

From what I read, this sounds awesome. I read rumors about this possibly being made, but I didn't really worry about it too much. But it is legit, as long as follow the few instructions. Unfortunately, I don't have 2 memory cards nor do I plan on getting one soon (some good prices for 128-256 MB cards, but I seem to be leaning towards a 512MB-1GB card). I read about a way to do it with just one card, but it seems way too impractical IMO. For the time being, I don't really need to have emulators on my PSP, although it would be cool. I am excited about what this could mean in the future, like what Miguel was mentioning earlier. There's supposed to be a way to do this for 1.51 PSP's, although it requires 3 cards. It also sounds like some people have been playing around with the firmware, so it is only a matter of time before this all becomes much more practical. I'm more interested in the non-emulator stuff, but this is one way to increase the attention to the PSP homebrew scene.

Let's just hope Sony handles this the right way...

They should embrace it, but they probably will try to stop it.

That's basically what I was thinking. I'd hope they would embrace it, but I could see them getting worried if a large portion of their customer base never buys a game and just plays old ROMs. Of course, they won't be making as much money off of their games, and maybe Nintendo, Sega, Square-Enix and other companies could get a little angry that Sony isn't doing anything to stop the whole emulation thing. I'm sure Nintendo doesn't like the idea that people will again be able to get for free a service that they were planning to charge money for. With this pressure, Sony could end up requiring firmware updates in the future, possibly alienating their userbase.

Although they could still do some things to support the scene while still making money. If they start selling UMD burners and UMDs, they could probably make some money on those sales for people who wanted to play 100's of ROMs and didn't want to buy a 1 GB memory card (which they can still profit from as well). It would also be pretty cool if some of the rumored features that were to come in future firmware updates (web browser, text editor, calculator, etc.) were actually provided by Sony before anyone was able to get it working on the PSP themselves. Like I said earlier, I'm more interested in the non-emulation stuff that you could potentially do on the PSP, so maybe they can jumpstart that side of things and not have to worry as much about people messing around with the PSP's programming. For example, if people do things to the PSP like the did with the GBA (the movie player for instance), I'm sure even more non-gamers will be buying the PSP and may still earn the company money. The GBA movie player makes the GBA a very interesting device that would definitely be worth the money; hopefully something similar could happen for the PSP.

So I'll guess we'll have to see where Sony stands on all this. From one of the recent interviews with Ken Kuturagi, he seemed thrilled about the possibility of packaging Linux with a hard drive for the PS3. Combine that with all the open source tools for Cell and the RSX, this should mean that plenty of people will be again playing around with the hardware (probably more so than the PS2 Linux kit, although not too sure). I hope that this means that they would like people to create whatever they want (as long as it isn't illegal or hurt their business too much) using their hardware.

As someone who's probably in the same situation (or will be), do you have anything that you can elaborate on in this situation? I'm guessing by your first statement that you welcome the idea, but would Gizmondo have some worries about the prospects? If you'd rather not (or can't) discuss this, that's fine; just curious to see things from a different point-of-view. It is a lot easier to embrace this kind of thing if you don't really have anything at stake.

Wow, I was checking this out like 5 minutes before you posted it. I for one hope that this works out since I don't have 2 memory sticks; I've been wanting to get in on this action though. Guess I'll find out pretty soon...

For those that don't know, it looks like the PSP devkit library has been leaked, so that combined with the exposure this has gotten should mean more exploit goodness from now on.

BTW Miguel, have you (or anyone else too I guess) checked out the PSP background changer exploit. That seemed like another cool thing to do with these exploits. It would be a nice way to customize my PSP, as long as it isn't to difficult.

Those are awesome. I wonder if I can split my year with my different interests. Say 4 are gaming-related (love to have some type of UE 3.0 background or maybe a FF one), another 4 or 5 related to sports (mostly Rockets), and then the rest can be random ones (maybe a Family Guy one or something like that). The more I think about it, the better it could be even though it is just an easy hack that enables feature that everyone has in Windows. I wonder how I'll react once the real fun begins.

I've tried out the custom background using the program called PSPersonalizer as discussed over at psphacker.com. Its very easy to do and less confusing than installing the emuls. Bascially the program uses flash memory to replace the original wall paper with a .BMP pic of your choice, but the pic must be no bigger than 300:170 and is no bigger than 150kb. You still need 2 MS to do this procedure though. Anyway here's the link to the guilde\procedure...
