Yeah, Remote Desktop on XP. Do you have a VPN connection into work? Do you have rights on your box at work to be able to remote desktop?

The best one is PCAnywhere, but that is not free. Windows XP has a build-in remote control program, it's in Accessories, called Remote Desktop Connection.

I bet your office firewall will prevent you from doing a remote-desktop to home.

If you can VPN into the network you can do it.

That's the one. I work for Symantec, and PCAnywhere sucks.

    Thanks all.

So http://www.realvnc.com/ has a free version.

I will only need it for emergencies, maybe modifying a file and uploading it via ftp client. Will this do the trick?

What about WinVNC or the XP version? As you can tell I don't know much about this. I don't know what a VPN connection is. :D All I know is UPN, channel 20.

Not free but it is the best that I have used when a VPN cant be used...

Try before you buy, but it's worth it..

Uploading files? No. XP Remote Desktop and VNC don't really do that. But you could use e-mail for exchanging files. Once received on the other end, you can use XP or VNC to manipulte whatever.

Use WS_FTP for FTP or CuteFTP for FTP. What do you want to do, transfer files? Don't have a FLASH JUMP Drive (USB, firewire, etc.)? Use BriefCase or yousendit.com . eMail will CLOG UP your capacity.

On your very first post you mention that you want to access your PC from home. Does your company offer Virtual Private Networking (VPN)? It's where your machine at home can connect via simulated network to your PC at work. Ask your company about it. THey may be already using it. Cisco has a VPN client for you to connect remotely if your company uses Cisco routers.

Send me an email through the board and I will forward my phone number. We can talk about what you want to do and the best way to do it.

I second the Gotomypc.com recommendation. We use it at work and it's the only program we have used that can work though our firewall without vpn. It's not free though.
