It was basically a public appology for not passing anti-lynching laws sooner. Now I'm not sure why Cornyn didn't sign it, but I wouldn't pass judgement until I actually read what it said, and heard his remarks on it... but I do admit I sounds kind of dumb not to sign something you know is going to pass with flying colors and could really not be seen as anything but a "good" thing to pass.

i don't know much about the specific wording or the resolution, itself. but it sounds like a good idea to me.

Nothing this embarassment of a Senator does surprises me anymore.

    as John Kerry said:

They're apparently holding the vote late tonight so they won't have to have a real roll-call vote (i.e., individual Senators won't have to vote up or down). The reason? So they can hide the 12 or so Senators who apparently think it's bad politics back home to sign onto a resolution that apologizes for not passing anti-lynching legislation sooner. Apparently, southern Senators fillibustered efforts to pass such legislation for years.

At what point did Miss lead the nation in lynching? Around the time of the civil war and shortly there after, I know that NY lead the nation in lynching.

I haven't seen Mr Byrd on the list yet but I don't care what letter you have after your name, not being a part of this bill is pathetic and sad

    http://www.berea.edu/faculty/browners/chesnutt/classroom/lynchingstat.html

Most of the lynchings that took place happened in the South....Mississippi had the highest lynchings from 1882-1968 with 581. Georgia was second with 531, and Texas was third with 493. 79% of lynching happened in the South.

Poor basso, when Robert Byrd retires or dies, he's not going to be able to point to him next time he has to defend a segregationist judicial nominee or other embarrassing consequences of aligning himself with southern conservatives & evangelicals and he will have to be content with fantasizing about the Colin Powell-Condoleeza Rice presidential ticket that has no chance of ever happening, ever.
