Could the Rockets' desired PF come from within the team?

    VIN BAKER

I know what you're thinking: The guy is finished
I am not hanging my hopes on Vin Baker, however if he doesn't revive his career with the Rockets, he won't be able to do it with any other team. This is the best situation, because
    1) He doesn't have any pressure to be a star and contribute every night
    2) Van Gundy is the ideal coach for him because JVG demands hard work and commands respect
    3) This is the first winning team with a winning attitude in a positive environment that he's been on since attempting to recover from his addictions
    4) Didn't have to play during the last two years and those two years without the pressures of the NBA should have helped his psyche and the ability to find himself again
    5) This is the first full summer that he'll be able to work out in three years. This summer should help his physique and overall game. All he needs is one spark. If he rediscovers his passion for the game, he could become a solid contributor on the team.

He doesn't have the pressure of starting on this team. However, if I was Juwan Howard, I would be looking over my shoulder.

This is wishful thinking on my part. Vin Baker could be in his Tyson-retirement phase. However, it would be great for VIN and the Rockets if he were to regain his from.

He is already signed for next year and nobody expects anything out of him. If he contributes, it would be a great bonus for the Rockets. Let's hope he has a year ala Deke Who-Wants-To-Sex-Me Mutombo. New York didn't seem to be a good situation for either of them.

2005-2006 will be one of two things for Vin Baker: This is his last season OR he will outperform his contract and edge out JH

Baker isn't going to do anything next season. His contract is going to expire and that's the last we are going to hear about him.

Mark my words: Vin Baker is done.

Put a fork in him, he's done. Vin Baker dosent have anything left in the tank. As a rockets fan I hope he can prove us all wrong but its not likely.

I have to agree with the others in this thread. All indications are that he's done. I kept hoping last year that he could still find some of the fire that he used to have, but he didn't. Baker hasn't done anything statistically significant since the 01/02 season & hasn't been dominate since the 99/00 season. That's at least 3 & 5 years respectively. Maybe he could surprise us, but I'm also of the opinion that he's through.

He is worse than scott padgett and ryan bowen. I went to a game and he was terrible. He couldn't shoot or pass for the few minutes he was in the game.

The only way Baker will lead to the Rocket's starting forward is if his expiring contract gets traded for one.

Les should get on Vin Baker's ass and have him work his butt off this summer. Say something like I'm paying you big bucks and you're not trying?

Vin Baker is a player that decides his own destiny. Getting back to where he was is almost impossible, but getting to be a contributor again is possible. I have no clue what it will take to get him out of his depression, but if he does come out, he will be very important to our team.

    macfan,
No one else that has posted sees what you see. Your vision is remarkable, especially if Baker has a comeback. However, I think having a second and third option will only make him better. That way he will not have the pressure on him to perform right away. I'm with you on this. If
Baker looks like he may be shaping up, then we can take a risk on someone else and that may pay dividends in the long run.

I seriously doubt Vin has it in him to come back. Its his last season. He will probably see most of his time next to JVG on the bench or on IR with a mysterious injury. This is his last year.

This thread is filled with "classic moments" if Vin becomes comeback player of the year. ;)

i dont think vin has been given enough minutes to see what he is still capable of. 3 min. of playing time is kind of a slap in the face and doesnt do much for confidence. maybe in the summer he can show something good.

I would honestly put him on the Summer League roster. He should average at least 15 a game there.

When I saw this thread, I thought it was about either Badiane or Braggs. Baker is baked, cooked, burnt. Ding, he's done. Trade his expiring for D. Miles.

    Dude.

He's not a good player anymore.

Even if he gets into shape, he just doesn't have "it" anymore.

Remember when Moochie lost 30lbs in the offseason and everyone was talking about how he'd have this great, bounce back year? And then we realized he's just no longer a good player?

That's the situation with Vin. Even if he gets into shape, his skills and his feel for the game have just eroded too much.

Kevin Willis is in better shape than 90% of the centers in the league, but he's a crappy player (and IMO, he's always been a crappy player when the games actually meant something... See 1997...)

while we try to hop aboard this time machine to 1994 why dont we bring dream back too?

seriously baker wont be close to the player he once was i was hoping for like 4pts 4 boards from him in limited minutes this year when we got him but he never even made it off the bench. jvg usually will play you if you are a hard worker and hustler (see bowen, ryan) it doesnt seem baker wants to put in the full effort that is needed for him to recapture the respect he once had.

If Vin had anything left, he would have shown it by now. We lost Juwan, we signed Braggs. If he can't play over the likes of Braggs, Spoon the whale or Ryan Bowen for that matter---you don't belong in the NBA.

After his contract expires and with Weisbrod out of a job, I doubt there's a GM stupid enough to give this guy a contract. Isiah might, but then again he's a PF over 6'9" so I doubt he'll go down that sorry road again.

Let's jnust pretend that Vinny comes on strong. Who among us would have confidence that he could sustain it for a full season?
