    Hey guys,

OK, so I have all those .avi (DivX is the program I use to play them) files for the Rockets highlights/games throughout the past season.

I would like to put some of them on blank DVD-R discs, and have the program/DVD-RW drive to do so.

However, I would like to know if this file format is compatible with DVD disk or do I have to encode them/convert them to a different format first? What format will I need to convert the files to to be able to burn them on a DVD-R?

Also, do you know any programs (preferably free) that I can use to convert files to a DVD-compatible format? I have with my DVD-RW drive a "Plextor DVD Writing software", but I couldn't open the .avi files to add them to the DVD project.

So, any help here would be appreciated guys.

You will need to convert them to dvd compatible mpeg2

Sometimes your dvd burning software will take care of it for you....some wont.

I personally recommend TMPGenc or Canopus Procoder.

TMPGenc is free...so that might be the way for you to go if costs matter..if you plan on using this repeatedly(as I do)...you might go for the ease of use and quality/speed of Procoder.

    alright, thanks R2K as always.

I didn't realize it would take 2 hours to convert a 50MB .avi file :(

    Ahh well...

thats the first thing you learn when doing video encoding...everything takes a long time to do...unless you have a top of the line dual processor, dual core, double data rate machine..and even then..it isnt instantaneous.

you should see how long it takes to encode 2 hours of video...you set it and forget it...

if speed is a factor...PRocoder is the one...I assume that you tried TMPGenc..it is much slower...but its free..you could always set it to do its thing overnight...then you wont notice how long it takes. ;)

R2K, what programs will do the encoding for you instead of making you do it yourself? I am still trying to figure out how to exactly do this because I converted and .avi file to .mpeg and my program (Roxio) still didn't recognize the file. So I am thinking that if I can get a program that will do all of it for me there will be no worries.

I still haven't found out about that bittrate stuff you were telling me about but you said it would take a long time to explain anyway.

well....when I'm authoring DVDs, I use Adobe Encore. It will encode to dvd compatibility if the file you import isnt already the right format..but I have yet to try to import avi files since I have another program that I use to convert to mpeg2.(Procoder)

What did you use to convert your files?

and did you convert to mpeg2 instead of normal mpeg(which is actually mpeg1)
