Knight replaces Dickey at Tech. Holy crapola. http://espn.go.com/ncb/news/2001/0307/1137811.html ------------------ www.swirve.com...The reason Al Gore invented the internet.
Bob Knight deserves Tech, and Tech deserves Bob Knight. I expect Knight to blow up at the media, fans, players, university, staff, etc...basically anyone besides himself within his first season. First, Mike Leech. Now, Bob Knight. TTU sure knows how to pick them. Must be an exciting time in Lubbock. [This message has been edited by Smokey (edited March 08, 2001).]
As a Tech alum, I will note that I hate the idea of Bobby Knight coming to the South Plains. If Tech actually hires him, they'll soon regret it. (And I know I won't support the program, or the school, as long as Knight is there.) ------------------ Houston Sports Board The Anti-Bud Adams Page
Spike and Dickey were pretty cool and great for Tech. Knight is just not Tech at all. He won't survive Lubbock beyond a season anyway.
I think this is actually a great move by tech. It's going to be more difficult to sell Tech by the name or by the city when compared to other Big 12 schools, so you have to give recruits a good reason to go there. While he seems like a psycho, Knight is a good recruiter and it's probably what Tech needs to get a boost in the Big 12. Even if he only lasts a few years, if Tech can improve and become competitive, then maybe they can build on that with another coach. ------------------ http://www.swirve.com ... more fun than a barrel full of monkeys and midgets.
What's wrong with Mike Leach? Tech fans shouldn't look this gift horse in the mouth. Tech is a third-tier (at best) basketball program and gambling like this is the only way (other than cheating) they can expect to achieve any national exposure.
I think this is good for Texas Tech. They blew their chance at national exposure by getting caught cheating with ineligible players the season after their Sweet 16 run in the mid-90s. Bobby Knight, as much as a nutcase as he is, is a great move on their part aside from getting Rick Pitino, which they had no chance of getting. ------------------ Rocks2001 in disguise. . .
This would be a great move for Tech. The Big 12 teams don't exactly shine on the court as well as they do on the football field. Bob Knight going to Tech would bring exposure to a conference that badly needs it in basketball. It might help recruiting for all teams in the Big 12. Now if only Texas could bring back Abe Lemons....!!! ------------------ "Blues is a Healer" --John Lee Hooker
His crap may work in Indiana, but he just entered Texas and it's a whole new ballgame here. ------------------ Onions is all I eat!
You thought I meant the school??? No, I'm talkin' about the good ol boys. Knight was never well-liked in Texas and still isn't. I'm not saying the school won't tolerate him. They hired him knowing his history. I just don't think his antics will play here like they did in Indiana. I could be wrong but I honestly hope someone just kicks his ass. ------------------ Squirrels is all I eat!
It is TTech's only chance at national prominence, but it's doomed to failure. First off, he's an overrated recruiter. His assistants did all the recruiting for him at IU. Recruits are gonna look at him and think "Do I really want to spend 4 yrs in Lubbock? With him?" I think they answer no, especially when they can go play at Ok St. under Eddie Sutton, or Texas w/Rick Barnes or even Baylor with Bliss. Secondly, he won't have his loyal army of wealthy alumni and student hooligans to intimidate the Tech AD into holding on to him too long. And it's not like they can keep it hidden in Lubbock, he's gonna be under a microscope from the first day cause what else will they cover in Lubbock? The new gas pump at the local Texaco? Besides, Bob Knight at least runs a clean program. Texas Tech does not. I don't know if he'll even take the job. I hope Knight does end up in Tech if for nothing more than Tech deserves to screw themselves over for they way they're screwing over James Dickey, not only by not giving him a fair shot, but the way he's being fired. This is almost as bad as the way Nebraska fired Danny Nee. ------------------ The Rockets will be the NBA champions. Believe.
No, it's because Tech is suffering from delusions of grandeur. They had their glory year-- 1995/96-- and evidently they were spoiled rotten by it. Same thing happened to Arizona football (12-1 in 1998, ran the school's winningest coach ever off TWO YEARS LATER). I'd be surprised if he left Tech for anywhere else. He wants to be somewhere where he can win, dominate the administration, and run the program relatively unchecked. In Knight's opinion, because he breaks no rules, he requires and deserves no oversight. Tech is an ideal situation for him in that regard because as you point out, he'll be bigger than the program. Yup, I thought you meant Tech. Sorry! I don't think Knight's any less well-liked in Texas than he is anywhere else outside Indiana. And he'll be insulated from the groups that WON'T like him (everyone else in Texas) by Tech and its fans. His antics most certainly won't play here. I agree with you on that. Indiana basketball is the biggest thing in the state, internally speaking. It dwarfs Purdue basketball, the state's pro sports teams, and even Notre Dame football (strictly in-state). Knight's success bought him a level of stature in Indiana that he will never come close to matching in Texas especially because he's coaching at a lesser program. He should have waited another year and taken over at Texas A&M once Melvin Watkins gets fired. Knight would fit in fine with the Ags. I'm with Pueldfor re: recruiting. Knight was a terrific recruiter years ago, but his refusal to kow-tow to recruits (admirable in my opinion) fell increasingly out of step with today's kids. Indiana's reputation, winning tradition and top-nothc facilities, though, made up for a lot of Knight's shortcomings. Tech does not have any of Indiana's natural advantages. Recruiting will not be easy in Lubbock. Neither will winning. ------------------ Things are tough all over, I know what you mean... --Damon Johnson
You're right BK. Knight will have a tough time with his antics in Texas. He might have been ok if he coached football! ------------------ Squirrels is all I eat!
I know Lubbock's desolate, but is Bloomington any better ? The only difference I can see is one is a basketball school, and the other a veterinary school. ------------------ "Hey Snoop Dog, I got my bi-yatch to make you some muffins."
I'm telling Sheryl Swoopes you were badmouthing Texas Tech, gr8-1. ------------------ Houston Sports Board The Anti-Bud Adams Page
Tell her you can find me at THE University. ------------------ "Hey Snoop Dog, I got my bi-yatch to make you some muffins."
Jeez, Jeff, what about Texas Tech makes you think they're going to do anything at all to rein in Knight? They're so desperate for a winner out there that they'll probably let him get away with more than Indiana did.
Is Tech firing Dickey because of NCAA violations? Why wait so long? IMO, Dickey did a good job with what he has. Texas Tech isn't a basketball powerhouse. Knight will bring media attention to Tech. He has been successful as a coach (not as much recently) and is very famous, so he will bring in recruits that Dickey could not. His presence will increase attendance at home and on the road. Bob Knight will be the program. If he is successful, he will get the praise and IMO leave Lubbock for the first major college job offered. If he is not successful, he will lash out at everyone. At least the Tech program is already in ruins. Bob Knight can't make it any worse. No offense to any Tech basketball fans or alumni. Just my opinions. ------------------
Gr-8, trust me, there is a huge difference between Bloomington and Lubbock. IU has a very pretty campus and you have to remember that most of them small Yankee states bunch all their cities real close together so's they can drive between em easier than driving from Lubbock to Dallas.
