Well, it's that time of year. I've got parts of my lawn that look fine but there are some dead spots I need to bring back to life. Does anyone know a good grass fertilizer? I've also got some weeds in the backyard that I need to kill. What's the best weed killer that won't kill the grass around them?
For the dead spots, I usually just reseed the area and about a week later... new grass. And for weeds, I hate using the sprays because it just kills the grass around it as well. So I've been paying kids to dig them out, root and all.
For saint augustine, the best fertilizer is scotts bonus S. It is slow release so it wont burn your grass. It will also kill weeds also. You can't seed st augustine, so you either have to patch it or let it grow back by pulling the dead grass and filling the area with good dirt. Healthy St augustine grows like a weed so it should fill up in no time. If you are impatient, buy some sod for 99 cents a piece at home depot. Nothing kills weeds like healthy st augustine because it just chokes the weeds out.
I'm having a huge problems with weeds right now, but as far as I know there's really nothing I can do abouyt it at this point. Every spring and fall you should use weed & feed, but there are very specifc times you should use them. I think our next chance is about mid-September.
No Doubt! I always spread my weed and feed in February and my winterizer in September. Keeps the carpet dark green and perfect for chipping golf balls!
I try to follow Randy Lemmon's fertilization schedule from The Gardenline. http://950kprc.com/gardenline-lawn.html For the record, he is against weed and feeds. He says they should never be used. If used regularly, Pre-Emergent herbicides should keep the weed problems down.
Check out this fertilization schedule from talk radio 950's Gardenline. I built this schedule into my Outlook calendar and get prompted whenever I need to fertilize. EDIT: Dammit, Faos. You beat me by less than a minute.
Anyone know of a reliable lawn guy/handy dude that would put in a few sprinklers on a small front lawn?
If you have St Augs and really want to make your neighbors jealous all summer and keep the weeds out.. it's top dollar stuff, but go down and pickup a few bags of 14x3 Osmocote, drop that stuff and your lawn will look 10 times better than the fools that pay chemlawn every few weeks... If you do this make sure to not cut the grass for atleast 10 days after the feed and water like hell the first 3.. your grass will never look so good and you wont have to toss any more food on it for the rest of the summer...just a tip, or you could always use the cheap Vigrow to some what get the job done
heh...Chemlawn...are they even still around? We used them back in the day....but after a couple of good seasons...the quality of the lawn dropped off...so we quit using them.
its hard to bring a dead spot back to life with fertilizer unless there area a couple of blades that surviced ....your best hope is to fertilize the healthy areas around it and hope it grows into and over the dead spot go to Home Depot, Lowes or any other place that does landscaping and get a couple of St. Augustine Grass Plugs to put in the dead spot heck, depending on how big the dead spot is, just buy a yard of grass (they are about $1.00 and will cover about 1x3 foot section and will take all of about 5-10 mins to install) i have a thick, green lawn with no dead spots and I use Scotts fertilizer every 6 weeks and a good does of Miracle Grow Grass stuff at the halfway point of that 6 weeks
All the tips on this page make good sence. I try to do as many of these as I can and it has seemed to help.
Don't use Bonus S. It has Atrazine which will be outlawed someday, as it already has in the EU. It messes with hormones, lasts forever, and gets in the groundwater. Herbicides applied when the temperature is above 90 will likely harm your lawn.
