thanks for the info, i figured as much it just seems strange to consider a portable so powerful. i'm gonna have to get another game, probably lumines since i've read so many great things about it and i love me a puzzle game.
I bought one for the kids about a month ago. I decided to try it out before I gave it to them. So now I'm buying another one for them. I love the damn thing. I can't put it down.
Great system, still too f**king expensive. Luckily I'm mooching off a friend's system - babysitting if you will - so I am enjoying some Lumines action. But I can't see dropping 300 on this thing (and that's without the bigger memory card) when it'll probably have a better 'value' pack soon, and with the XBOX 360 this fall and next gen stuff middle-to-late next year. Not worth the money.
I love mine. My batteries last 5 1/2 to 6 hours and it only ran out of juice once on me, and when I plugged it in the game picked up right where it left off. I haven't touched my PS2 since I bought it. (Although next week on vacation I plan to take on God Of War) Lumines is such a great game, my wife is even hooked on it. With GTA:Liberty City Stories being released in September, I doubt the price will come down until after Christmas.
RC is right. The PSP is more powerful than the PS1, but still short of the PS2. Which is quite impressive for a handheld, until............ DD
I've had my PSP for over three weeks now. I use it everyday, at work, at home, when I carpool, waiting at dentist/doctor office. At work I use it when I head to the gym. On the stationary bike I'll play a game (usually Hot Shots Golf), and when I get on the stair stepper or treadmill I'll watch anime or other shows I have converted to MP4 format. At home I use it during downtime while playing World of Warcraft. If I have a long flight or walk, I'll pull it out and play. Also if I can stay focused on the conversation, it makes phone calls with my girlfriend much more entertaining. Carpooling works great, since my drive to work is the same time it takes to play 18 holes of golf or watch 1 anime episode. If I have to drive I can let someone else enjoy it. Before I got the system I wasn't working out, so for that reason alone it's been worth the money to me (especially considering I got a great deal from a friend who works at a game store). If you have the money to burn I highly recommend it, along with a 1 gig stick. B
Now pulling that off is impressive. Its hard enough staying focused when just staring at a wall. Thanks for the input everyone, very helpful info. I have a question about watching movies, how do you go about doing this? Im a big time amateur when it comes to converting files or whatever. Is this something that a guy like me can pull off or should I go back to undergrad and get a degree in computer science?
I've had my for 3 month now and I think its great...actually I spent more time doing the other things on it beside playing game such as putting in some Rockets high lights and showing it off to a friend. Uses it as an mp3 player or store some p*rn pic..errrr I mean you can do a lot of neat stuff with this thing. What sold me is the large LCD screen. Holy smoke, you could fool someone into believing it was a hi-def screen! Seriously, it does look that good...just pop in that Spiderman2 umd and you will be amazed. A true webbrowser will come out soon so you could go on-line on the go, what more can you ask for a little hand held like this? Those who think the DS is better must be on crack, funtionallity and cpu power wise the DS doesn't even come close. The only good thing thats goin for the DS is the touch screen and the huge library of games, but the PSP hasn't been out that long so expect more games to come out for it. Yes its expensive but its worth it considering all the thing you can do with it...there's always something for everyone and thats the best thing you could say about the PSP. Onre more thing: It is a must to get a 1G mem stick if you're looking to put in movies,music,pic..etc and a 512M should be the minimum. I can't do much with the included 32M stick other than playing games.
There are a couple programs out there that are pretty easy to use for converting videos for the PSP. I've been using the Sony Image Converter. All I have to do is pick a video from my HD, click on a convert button, and then transfer that to my PSP. All pretty simple and easy, IMO. There's also some options for the conversion itself (like bitrates), but I haven't messed with those too much. I haven't bothered keeping up with the video converting software in a while though. There might be better programs out there; I just stick with this since it worked good enough for me. If you were to have some problems though, I'm sure you will be able to find some help here. I'm no expert on video converting either, but I can try to help as much as I can. That is one thing I like about these new handhelds. From a hardware perspective, they are pushing the limits of technology, something Nintendo didn't really have to do in the past. IIRC, they had the design of the GBA done long before they finally decided to bring it out. With a little more competition, we should be getting some great features coming from handhelds, especially in the graphics department. If the PSP is a hit, which it seems like it is, I would imagine Sony would come up with another portable beast for the PSP2, or whatever they call it. I'm not sure how long they want the PSP to last, but depending on the timeframe, they can probably stick a pretty powerful Cell chip in the next device, which will keep their R&D and manufacturing costs down a bit while still giving us something that can put up great visuals, along with other things.
I need help still. I want to video files and that tmac dunk on bradley on my PSP. I would extremely appreciate it if someone could help me out mikeisme713@sbcglobal.net
I just did some searching, and I found out PSP Video 9 has been doing some work on their program. I downloaded their latest version and it is a lot less buggy than before; I'll probably switch to that since the options seem a bit better. Try downloading that from their site: http://www.pspvideo9.com/ They have some directions on the site and it seems pretty straightforeward, so you may be able to go from there. If I missed something though, and you still have some problems, feel free to ask some more questions. edit: Oh, and I'm assuming you were referring to the movie conversion part. Did you have any other problems? (connecting the PSP to your PC or whatever?)
My brother traded his Samsung 20 Gig mp3 player for a psp.......I have to tell you that at first i was really impressed with the picture quality. the device itself is really badass......the thing is that it just doesnt' have storage space like an ipod, and if i were going to drop $250, i'd like some onboard storage. I'm not crazy about going out and droping $130 on a 1 gig card and having to convert avi files to psp files so that i can play them on the psp. It all depends on what you want....if you want portable gaming, then the psp is the way to go......
http://psp.connect.com/ go there and watch the tutorial on how to get video on your psp. it's very easy and it's only a few steps. after that follow rc's advice and download psp video 9. it's free and you can convert that dunk mpeg into something the psp can read in like a minute.
Addressing some of the stuff above. * I am using PSP Vid 9. One of the nice features of is, is that if you have your PSP connected to the USB port correctly the program will recognize it and save your converted files there automatically. * You can get a system at Best Buy without having to buy the bundle. I got mine there and bought the games that I wanted. * I always thought B might be crazy, but his post above just confirmed it. *My battery life has been phenomenal. I play at least 6-8 hours before needing to recharge. I also have a USB connector that will charge while it is connected to the computer (Not sure if all the USB cables do this). Also as stated above. If you are in the middle of a game and the battery dies, if you plug in to recharge quickly it will hold your place. If you attempt to turn it back on, it will fully drain the battery and it will not hold your place (unfortunately I found this out the hard way).
I guess I have to be crazy to spend as much time playing games as I do. By the way, you should play some more World of Warcraft, Battlegrounds is a lot of fun. I was up past 3am playing last night and got up early this morning to get some more game time in before work. B
