lord knows i love kayne to death (the new tune "diamonds" is a gem), but is he really all that innovative or is he simply the last of a dying breed or something. kanye brings back tons of memories from the early ninties of east coast rappers that had more stuff to rap about than twenties, phantoms, etc. jeru the damaja, nas (first and second album), wu tang, keith murray (yes, the whole album was good besides “the most beautifullest thing in the world”), the artifacts, pharcyde, de la, black moon, and practically every other early east coast rapper from the ninties. (sorry moe, west coast stuff was too radio-ish at this time.) i dunno, it just seems that i appreciate his rhymes more for the content rather than his skill. it’s almost like his rap is a throwback basketball jersey or something. we just like to reminence (i know this is spelled very wrong, but nevermind). some artists are critically acclaimed for being ahead of their time, but he seems to be put on a petistol (misspelled purposely… just an old “nba dish” reference), for being something that we don’t have enough of these days. agreed? yes or no?
Well if he had beaten Eric B & Rakim in moes' rap tournament, I would say yes. But he did not, so I say no.
yes he overrated you taking about a time before everyone started faking the funk back when everyone WROTE THEIR OWN STUFF none of the ghostwriting crap Rocket RIver
In my opinion... Kanye gets the credit he deserves. Not overrated or underrated. And he is my favorite rapper.
I like the sound of his music. Sometimes not so much on the lyrical side or the production/beat side, but just the overall sound. Lyrically and instrumentally, his music can be rather exceptional too. But it's pretty refreshing to hear a sound I like on the radio, so it could be considered ahead of its time from my earspective. At least not totally of its time. Moe got all mad at me once for talking down on Kanye, but I've since heard "Diamonds" and that's the best song I've heard on the radio in years - so I'll speak positively of him this time.
OS - The fans want the feeling of a Tribe Called Quest, but all they got left is this guy called West. Diamonds is forever. Kanye is the shizznizzity. Mike Jones .. eh I'm not impressed, I think Slim Thug is better. And all these "east coast rappers" don't have **** on hieroglyphics.
I get flamed by my friends all the time when I say I'm not a big Kanye West fan. Some of his beats get a bit redundant. The sped up soul samples get old to me sometimes. I liked Commons album but I wish he had more producers working on it.
Yeah, Commons album is tight but i think it would have been even better if he had greater assortment of producers.
yes but a lot of rappers and producers are now. 50 cent has to be the most overrated person in hip hop right now. I actually really like his production, but I agree he isn't ahead of his time as a lot of fans would have you believe.
After seeing the "Dreams" (Game) video and the "Jesus Walks" video, I don't think he is overrated, although he is not the best around. I think anything Dre touches turns gold, he is an amazing producer, and a fine rapper as well. Anyways, I am a BTNH fan all the way, it is East 1999 my *****
