I thought this was an interesting tidbit in the Chronicle, that was worth documenting, regarding what trade exceptions we have. It says we have 3 exceptions. One for 2.4 million left from the McGrady trade that expires June 30th, and also ones worth 1.1 and 1.3 million. I didn't realize we had 3 of them ... good info for our dreamcasting this summer. <font size=+1">Trade talk coming June 5, 2005, 1:09AM NBA NOTEBOOK By JONATHAN FEIGEN (end of article) With NBA scouts and general managers heading to Chicago this week for the annual predraft camp, expect trade speculation to increase dramatically. This always happens when such gossips get together, but this season, there is more to talk about. The draft seems exceptionally deep, roughly between picks 20 and 45, unless too many players withdraw from the draft. Because of that, more teams seem interested in moving down, as in an NFL draft, than in most seasons. Much of the talk will center initially on teams overstocked at the same positions — Memphis, Boston, New York and especially Portland. The Trail Blazers, with the third pick of the draft and with Sebastian Telfair in place at point guard, will likely have to take a forward. But they have the high-priced Darius Miles and hugely talented Travis Outlaw at small forward, with Zach Randolph taking loads of shots at power forward. Memphis has had trouble finding playing time for its past first-rounders. The Celtics loaded up with rookies last season. The Knicks have a roster full of power forwards and ridiculously bloated contracts. The Rockets will be in the middle of conversations because they have a trade exception worth about $2.4 million from the Tracy McGrady trade that will expire June 30. But the Rockets will not feel pressure to make a move with that exception because they will also have a mid-level exception to spend, and the next collective bargaining agreement could require that the mid-level exception be split and used on two players. The Rockets also have trade exceptions worth $1.1 million and $1.3 million.
And just so we can put this to bed....we can't COMBINE those trade exceptions. The 2.4M one MIGHT have some value if a team wants to get rid of a player before the draft along with a draft pick (or swap picks). This would be similar to what happened last year when the Clippers dumped Ely and a draft pick on the Bobcats so the Clippers could reduce their payroll. But in the end I dont see any of those exceptions being used.
For those curious, the two exceptions came from the MoT trade and the Reece Gaines trade. The 1.3 should be the Reece Gaines one (1.2+100K), but the MoT trade seems it should be 1.25 mill. Probably an error in numbers.
...and I was gonna suggest the rockets add them together with Ward, Spoon, Sign and Trade Barry and a future second rounder for KG ! (then come back later today and say that CD sucks because he can't get my version of the deal done)
we cant atleast trade them for second round picks? this draft is deep...so the probablity of us being able to find a player worth a damn is pretty solid. players expected to go second round as of now: salim stoudamire julius hodge francisco garcia travis diener ryan gomes nate robinson randolph morris these are just some names that we could possibly pick up in the second round. just a thought
I agreee - with the potental for expansion of the NBDL and the fact that this looks to be a deeper draft - having a mid second round pick would be nice
NIKE - I never bothered to check the numbers on the Mo T trade. But it would appear to me that we sent part of the McGrady exception to the Bucks not the other way around. We traded Gaines for Hamilton and got Mike James with our TE. IMHO, whatever TE is left is residual of the TMac-Francis deal.
So, does this mean the $1.3 million trade exception also expires June 30th and the $1.1 million TE expires in February 2006?
GATER- You have it right. I don't disagree with anything you said. Hamilton is a minimum salary player- he counts a zero salary incoming to us for trade purposes. In essence: Bucks perspective: James, Hamilton for Gaines+picks. Trading down in salary is always ok. Rockets perspective: James for TE+picks, Gaines for Hamilton (trading down in salary). That's why it's the 2.4 mill number. Our trade exception was 5.48 mill, and James' salary was 3.1 mill. 5.48 - 3.1 = 2.38 mill (2.4 mill). I see it as trading Gaines for essentially zero creates another unrelated exception. JV- The Chronicle implication is right. The more recent Reece Gaines TE is in no way linked to the original TMac deal. That exception expires in February 2006 along with the MoT one. We have the remnants of the Francis/TMac TE (2.4 mill) expiring June 30th, but the others go through to one year from the trades.
Well, I had hopes we could get Eric Williams with our TE. Looks like that won't be possible, since his salary is higher. What could we get with that small of a TE? The article mentions a draft pick ... can we just trade our TE for a draft pick, and would that be enough value to someone like Memphis? Seems like they'd rather have cash, and someone will probably buy it for 3 mil this year. We probably ought to, in fact, since it is such a deep draft ... either use it, or package it for someone in trade. One more trading chit we could use.
You can't exchange a TE for a pick because a pick is worth $0 in trade. The TE is small, but it can be useful for making a trade of players (on both sides) easier to fit thru the CBA requirements. As for Memphis, if they sell their pick, I wouldn't expect them to sell within their conference, much less their division.
Wow, that is a nice, nice list. This is really a deep draft. (although I don't see Garcia or Hodge lasting past the first round ...)
