Saw an interview with a rep from that magazine this morning, on CNN. He said it was a hydrogen-powered scooter, with parallel (L and R) rather than inline (front and back) wheels. Supposedly the production for IT has been temporarily delayed due to environmental concerns about the manufacturing plant. Irony can be pretty ironic sometimes. ------------------ In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.
Seriously?? The prototype wasn't called the "Hindenburg" I hope. ------------------ Behad Sergeant at Arms of the Clutch BBS
Everything I've read said it was some type of scooter. Even those patents he applied for had diagrams of scooters. That was one of my initial guesses, but I had no idea it was hydrogen-powered. Hydrogen powered. I kid you not. Supposedly environmentally friendly, although the whole volatile gas, burning up in a fiery blaze angle wasn't discussed. But I just remembered, the interview wasn't on CNN. It was on the Today Show, or whatever that lousy program is with Katie Couric. That's not how hydrogen power works. The hydrogen fuel does not actually burn, and the engine remains cool. The hydrogen is sent through a catalyst, which splits the hydrogen into protons and electrons. The electrons are then used as electricity to power the engine. It really is quite fascinating, and this probably will be what replaces gasoline as soon as the government gives up on the oil industry. ------------------ "Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning how to put food on their family while being put to death."

That's probably the whole "change the world" angle that got people so worked up about this. I saw that interview on the Today show also and they showed a rendering of the scooter. The thing looked silly and I could hardly imagine how it could be useful, let alone earth shattering. It is just a two-wheeled, motorized scooter after all. As they mentioned on the show, how fast could you possibly go on it (or want to go, given that there's no windshield ). The way the thing is being powered, however, could have far reaching implications and that's what the magazine rep was suggesting. ------------------
they showed it on techtv news last night. doesn't look that impressive. all this fake hype reminds me of that Simpsons episode with Gabbo. ------------------
If there's one person I'd want to conduct an in-depth exploratory interview on a scientific topic, it's Katie Couric. Jeez, was Rebecca Romjin busy? [This message has been edited by BrianKagy (edited March 07, 2001).]
If there's one person I'd want to conduct an in-depth exploratory interview on a scientific topic, it's Katie Couric. Maybe not the best choice of words after her recent, on-air colonoscopy. [This message has been edited by jamcracker (edited March 07, 2001).]
http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/066/nation/Inventor_s_clues_fuel_talk_that_ideal_engine_is_near-.shtml The Boston Globe says it's a scooter with a Stirling Engine (Stirling Engines were invented in 1816, by the way, by Robert Stirling in order to provide a safer alternative to steam engines which were known to explode sometimes) which apparently work with several different kinds of possible fuels (actual fuels, though, putting water in it won't do anything). The bit in the article about the power grid may not be earthshattering, either, since other people and companies are working on other solutions for on-site power generation (of course, there already are some on-site power generation solutions such as solar panels, etc). ------------------ Houston Sports Board The Anti-Bud Adams Page
