Manny, I did the samething...how did you like it?? I loved When the Pawn, but I can see whay this CD isnt going to come out.. I only really liked 2 songs on it and thought it was a very odd album, almost like someone else should be singing it not Fiona..
I liked it but not as much as the first 2 albums, especially compared to "Tidal". Damn, I love that album! From what I understand - the record company (I believe Sony) wanted Fiona to put at least one "commercial" song on the album and she refused. She didn't want to compromise her integrity as she felt the album was fine the way it was. I have always liked her but hearing about her stance on that made my liking of her go through the stratosphere. I recently had to reformat my computer, so I lost those tracks but it shouldn't be hard to get them back again. I need to listen to that album again.
Just got my Rolling Stone and read the review on it. It got 3 out of 5 stars. Im not worried though, Im still going to buy it, but I guess critics were expecting a little bit more out of the band (evolvement wise) like Radiohead has on their albums.
Don't ever read Rolling Stone for music recommendations. That's like listening to Sean Hannity for voting advice.
the latest issue contains exorbitant praise for the white stripes - get behind me satan. i'm listening to a couple tracks which sound like a good continuation off elephant. have you had a chance to listen to this yet?
I read that too back on a plane trip from LA on Friday and it made me feel good. Them saying it is a 3 star album means that it will probably really be like a 5 star album.
X & Y got a perfect 5-star review from Blender. Okay, it's not exactly Rolling Stone, but Blender can be surprisingly accurate with their reviews. (Yes, I get it for free.)
I just can't get into them. At the end of the day, I need something that reminds me that Otis Redding once walked this earth. Apparently, I'm not alone: Clearly, Coldplay is beloved: by moony high school girls and their solace-seeking parents, by hip-hop producers who sample its rich instrumental sounds and by emo rockers who admire Chris Martin's heart-on-sleeve lyrics. The band emanates good intentions, from Mr. Martin's political statements to lyrics insisting on its own benevolence. Coldplay is admired by everyone - everyone except me. NY Times article by the great Jon Pareles
Must admit that I'm quite fond of Coldplay. Parachutes was almost perfect as a debut. Unlike others, I believe they dodged the sophmore jinx nicely with 'Blood to the Head" which I like almost as much. Coldplay finds it's self in a pivital moment with X & Y. So far all I have heard is Speed of sound which I consider to be a classic straight out of the box. I look forward to hearing the rest of it but can't help but think it will be hard to match the excelent results of the first two lp's. More than ever (due to ass-hole record companys), the pressure is on. Actually, I feel contemporary UK bands life Travis ansd Guster to be as good as or better; but Coldplay is in thr cats-bird seat and only wish them well and continued stellar lps. We shall see... As to Oasis, I REALLY like their new single Laila (sp?). I hope it is true (as others have posted) that this is a return to the Brit Pop excellence form they have shown (albeit sporadically) in the past. Finally, Jack White is on a SERIOUS role and I can't help but admire his non-stop creative binge. Even Meg shines brightly on Blue Orchid. Oh yeah, heard the first few minutes of a Coldplay introduction to X & Y on a SD radio staion today. Chris seemed very humble and admitted confusion over the hype of their band. He referred to 'Apple' as his new daughter (not by name) and there was no mention of Paltrow. In addition he went on to heap praise upon their guitar player stating the songs do not come to life until he nails the arrangment. 'Tis gratifying to see the fame has yet to spoil him.
i had no idea that so many people (not you) find rush of blood to be dissapointing compared to parachutes. interesting. lyla, is imo, one of the weakest songs on the album. i like it though. i think noel even said they wouldn't have released it as the first single had sony not forced them to. definitely pick up the album, there really isn't a bad song on there.
Hey Big, I am going to go ahead and pick up the new Oasis album as AMG gave it a good review as well. Also will pick up the Verve's 2nd album, "A Northern Soul". Maybe some day (not now, though) I will start a thread on Brit-pop bands.
Cold Play's concert dvd is awesome. I turn the baby up when they start playing "In my place" and it's like you're right there. Can't wait for X&Y.
Anyone else think their new single sounds a bit like Clocks II? I like Coldplay but I'm weary of bands that take themselves too seriously, which I think Coldplay does. Part of the reason I've phased out of Radiohead. Just my flea bitten opinion.
FYI- Fiona is allegedly in the studio working with producers on another album and will also allegedly release Extraordinary Machine as a double disc with the new material. Fingers crossed much? As for the new Coldplay, I can't remember the last time I was this anxious for a new album. I've listened to it numerous times via the web and fell in love with the new tunes immediately. I watch the live DVD about once a week and already have seats to the concert come September thanks to my job and season tickets at the Woodlands Pavilion. Screw the haters, I love this band 4-evah.
Bingo. First of all, I'm not a Coldplay fan at all, so I'm biased. That said, I'm sick of Martin talking about how they're one fo the greatest bands in the history of the world.
I like the new Coldplay, and I have a good feeling about them. The same feeling I had about U2 when I first heard them. AGAIN .. THIS IS THE LEAK FROM MTV .. COLDPLAY'S NEW ALBUM THE LEAK: X&Y
