I was stranded the other night because my battery died. Luckily I was in downtown Austin and I was able to get a buddy to drive me home so that I could change out the battery the next day, but it got me thinking if some kind of roadside service like AAA is worth it?

What are your experiences? Good or bad?

Two questions you need to ask yourself.

    1. How often are you gonna use it?
    2. Are you prepared and capable/knowledgeable enough to handle most situations yourself?

I usually have tools and a good spare so it's not really worth it for me. I did however get it for my wife.

It's only like 25 bucks a year. That comes out to 50 cents a week.

Yes, it is very much worth it. Piece of mind is a good thing. Especially for 50 cents a week. Free towing is also a good thing.

    1. You won't know until it's already happened.
    2. Some situations you can't do anything about.

In my experience, AAA is a lifesaver. I've had a more than a couple of incidents while out of town, and would have been in a world of hurt if it wasn't for them. Blown tire, dead battery, etc. Something else - if the police put out on their radio that a motorist needs assistance for a dead battery or keys locked in the car (non-tow issues), you'll be waiting for a very long time. AAA-sent guys will be there as fast as possible.

Yes it's worth it. Alcoholism is not a good thing.

    Oh wait. Triple A!

    :D

If your warranty doesn't provide free towing, then yes it is worth it. You cannot put a pricetag on peace of mind.

My womans father has it and he couldnt get his car to start so he called AAA and had it towed a few miles to the dealership well his AAA plan only had free tows for like 5 miles then you pay the rest.. it was a joke, if you do it make sure to get the package with the longer tows..

And do you want to? Late at night....pouring rain...you want to start messing with a dead battery? Changing a tire? Finding a tow truck?

    Plus free maps and guidebooks.

I think it's a great deal, especially if you aren't into fixing tires or messing with batteries (like myself). For some reason, I have had like 4 blown tires, and AAA was there every time. They have also been there to give me jumps.

I don't know about the towing, but I'm happy I got it just for the reasons above.

AAA also towed me for free (well included in the yearly fee) to my mechanic at 2 in am when my car wouldn't shift out of park.

    That was nice. :D

The one time I needed AAA, I couldn't use it cause my dad had the card. He got me my own card after that.

I wouldn't say it is absolutely necessary, but it gives peace of mind to know you have roadside assistance anytime you need it.

True enough. I think AAA is worth it, but if you're out on the road a lot you might want to get the AAA Plus package. One time my timing chain broke RIGHT in between Austin and Houston - I mean right exactly in the middle. At least my AAA service got me in touch with a tow truck and paid for the hookup and first few miles (of course, I had to pay for the other 75? miles). I got AAA Plus after that, which will tow you a lot farther.

Better than what was supposed to come with my car, though. The car manufacturer would have sent me to College Station for repairs under the policy, since I broke down close to Brenham. Look, I had to get back to Austin. I didn't need to be stranded in College Station for no reason.

AAA is also good for when you lose your keys. At least they figure out who to call (locksmiths, etc.) and you don't have to pay for it. I haven't thought about tires, but that's true too... I'm worried that I'll blow a tire on my truck. On my old compact car, I would just put the spare on. Truck tires are heavy and a lot more complicated, and I would have a lot more trouble getting it on by myself.

Are you sure about that? I think it's $2.50 a month on mine, and that option has nothing to do with your driving record.

Was the dealership AAA approved? They tow for free to any AAA approved shop and there are PLENTY of those in Houston. Seems like about half of all shops are AAA approved. You shouldn't have any problem finding one that's convenient.

They have EXCELLENT customer service. The 3 times I've used them, the guys on the phone were VERY helpful and the guys that showed up were very friendly and helpful. I have nothing but good things to say about the service.

Good man! I can't wait until it comes back to Houston radio on Tuesday. Be ready for me to start a one man crusade to get everyone on this site addicted like me!
