It was almost 6 years ago, but I went through a severe crisis of "trying to figure out what the hell to do with my life" type thing.

I had been working at this credit union for over 2 years but the pay sucked and my supervisor was a b****. So, I quit that job and turned in a 2 week's notice to do what I knew my dad wanted me to do - teach school. I taught 9th grade algebra and pre-algebra; I lasted 4 days. Only time in my life I had a nervous breakdown - I just couldn't do that type of work. I learned a valuable lesson - never do something for someone else, do it for yourself.

The bad thing was that happened around the middle of November and I didn't want to leave the area. It became damn near impossible to find a full-time job without leaving the area. I tried to get back into banking and grovelled several times to my old employer (the credit union I had worked for) - this is how desperate and miserable I was. It got to the point where I couldn't even take a nap during the day at my house because I would get these terrible nightmares. I could only sleep during the day at my parents' place. Meanwhile, every day that went by with me not having a job, I felt more and more sleazy. I started to fall into a depression and had thoughts about suicide. It didn't help that I was hopelessly in love with a high-maintenance girl that was stringing me along. Did I mention that this was the darkest time of my life yet?

So finally out of desperation, I took a damn job of selling cars - knowing that I did not have the personality to be a salesman. I lasted 2 days, got my day off, and then called the manager on my day off to tell him I wasn't coming back. To this day, I still will not put that job on my resume nor on a job application. The only reason why I even took that job was out of sheer desperation. It wasn't too long after that (probably about 2 weeks) that I got a call from the place I work with now. I can happily say that I have been with them for over 5 years and don't look to leave any time soon.:)

Man...I'm 19 and a half and have yet to have a job in my life. Applied at Best Buy and Circuit City for the summer, no call backs yet. I was gonna go try Fry's seeing as how I'm in the Aldine area and so I'm 5 minutes away from the store, but damn my laziness. :D

I think tomorrow I'll try another job hunt.

My manager at Circuit City all got transferred or promoted to other stores, and we got all these feminazi Bit**es. One of them used to make us flip dollar bills right side up, and the other one used to make us vaccum the floor even though the vaccum cleaner used to spit out more dirt. I got so pissed off one day, i sent in my 2 weeks notice, and then i just never went back to work. Had 30 messages from the one good "guy" manager left at the store, but decided that it wasnt worth working for them, plus i was stuck at $8.75 an hour. So i just left.

    I should hope not!

It's really amazing how many people put two and three month stints on their resumes...what the hell is an employer going to think about someone who has only stuck with his jobs for a few weeks?

I have been at gerlands (heard of it?) for 3 years and 5 months. I have basically sacked groceries, cashiered, stocked, and work in customer service. making 7.90 an hour. I honestly think customers (some of them) are ignorants. anyways should I quit the job since im going to college or should I take a leave of absence and come back?

I was just kidding. BTW, the urinal tops mine... I'd rather work at UPS/Walmart unloading trucks again than cleaning public urinals. Hell, I'd rather french kiss a crocodile...

    Shortest job experience:

About 10 years ago, just after my third child was born, I decided to get a second job to help out at Christmastime. I applied for a night stocker job at Toy's R us, and got the job. I filled out all the paperwork, got a schedule.....and never showed up for my first shift. Just changed my mind. To my surprise, at the end of January I got a W2 from them with all zero's on it.

As for the hardest jobs, you guys should try tank cleaning for an environmental company. Put on a level B suit:
strap an SCBA to your back, go into a 120 degree atmosphere and shovel sludge for 12 hours. I did this for 6 months.

I was at Fry's a few weeks ago when Apples Tiger OS was released. It said $129 on the box, but for some reason they only charged me $99. I had bought some other stuff so I really didn't notice until I got to my car.

    Thank you, Fry's!

I've worked quite a few jobs, most of them crappy. Worst one was working at a fabrics store in college. It was down off Fondren before it closed down, and it sucked. I was the only guy there besides the receiver who worked in the back. Since he was a skinny little dude, I had to unload fabric shipments when they arrived. And I'm talking these giant spools of fabric that could weigh up to 100 pounds for the real heavy stuff like brocades (What? I said brocades, so what? Stop looking at me like that...). The manager was always little Miss "You MUST Be Happy at Work!" who chewed out anyone who dared not have a smaile plastered on their face at all times.

The breaking point for me came when I had to unload a truck full (literally over a ton of fabric, I remember the invoice even today) of stuff halfway through my shift. I'm sitting there in jeans, an undershirt, and a blue denim shirt (uniform of the day) in the middle of summer (easily 95 degrees out) sweating like crazy and getting dirt and dust all over me from the trailer and fabric. I finally finish, and go back out front to where the bathrooms are to clean up. The boss sees me, takes me into her office, and starts yelling at me for looking "unprofessional" because I was dirty and sweaty in front of customers!

I just looked at her and walked out of her office. I told her to mail me my last check, there was no way I was stepping foot in there again.

I'm actually looking to leave my current job so I can find a job closer to home and finish college. Man I'm too old to go back to school. I'm so stinkin' close though it has become a quest for me.

I worked one shift as a dishwasher at a homeless shelter, (Catholic schools have different systems of punishment than public schools). The food there was less than appetizing before it was partially consumed and returned. I didn't find the job all that difficult, but the smell of rotting produce was not the most pleasant experience of my life. At the end of the day, they said I was the best worker they had ever had there, even working through lunch. That was the time that I set a school record for most days tardy.

Agree completely. Did it for a year and a half at an extremely busy bar/restaurant. That **** builds character, but was pretty infuriating. You get no respect from management, but luckily I'm a pretty sociable guy so I made nice with everyone I worked with. Didn't hurt that the co's were for the most part pretty attractive.

Truth time: Did any of you dishwashers/busboys eat after people? *Raises hand* Yeah it's gross. After the midnight shift, when you're busting ass and your stomach is begging for substance, anything is edible. Trust me.

I was a bus boy at Louise on the Lake when I was 15 in 1985 (I had to wear a sailor's outfit). I ate off people's plate but only Alaskan King Crab legs (we had them on the buffet on Thursdays). They had a protective shell and they were incredible.

    you got lucky.

most of the customer service people at Fry's are worthless.

As long as you know what you need when you go in there...it's a great place to shop....but god help you if you actually need real advice.

Worked at the Diamond Shamrock at Jones/290 near all those car lots. I'd work the 3-11 shift which means I'd get there just as the getting off work crowd would start to arrive. Then they would leave me alone to man the entire store when we had the cheapest gas around....result?

I couldn't restock the cooler or the beer bins because I was stuck behind the register, customers would b!tch "why aren't there any bud/bud light/miller etc. on ice?!" Well maybe because the guy in front of you bought the last three and I've had a steady stream of customers for the last two hours!

Drive offs: the bane of the clerk. Customers would fill up and then move so someone else would be able to pull in and fill up. Result? Since I was the only one there and trying to apppease why no beer on ice guy, it was imposible to keep track of the pay inside customers. If there was a drive off I'd be written up since it was obviously my fault that I didn't run out there ignoring the line of customers (who would rob me blind if I left the store) and throw myself in front of the perpetrators car.

The worst though is the policy of not keeping more than $30 dollars in the drawer. Customers would put like $5 dollars worth of gas in their car and then pay with $100 dollar bill! When I told them I didn't have change they'd explain in their most condescending tone "Well that's all I have so I guess I get my gas for free right?!" Also people would come in and buy a pack of gum just to break a $20, people gas stations are not banks!

I finally got fired for keeping too much money in the drawer because it was the only way to handle the large bills I kept getting. On my way out I kicked in the glass door:D

I left my job two weeks ago (which is why I haven't been posting too much). Best decision I ever made. Of course I kind of have the option to return in January or anytime before then, which sort of alleviates the "oh sh-t, I have no job" factor.
