I have seen that movie several times that I can quote almost everyline. It's my favorite movie. Does anyone else love it? I know its a few years old, but I never get sick of watching it on video. Anyone else know of any other good prison movies with the exception of the Green Mile? I don't care if they are old or new. It's a fascinating subject to me. Question: If you were sent to prison for a heavy sentence for something you didn't do (and the evidence was weighed against you), would you try to break out knowing you would be persecuted by the law or wait in prison to try to get parolled. I don't know about you guys, but I would try to come up with a master plan to escape. Freedom is something you take for granted until it's gone. I could not bear to live in walls the rest of my life. What are some of your thoughts on prison movies and the above situation? ------------------
I love that movie, too. It's one of those films that when I saw the previews, I didn't think I'd like it. But I ended up watching it on TNT one night, and I was hooked. I've watched it several times since then (bought it on DVD even). Anytime I'm flipping through the channels and see it on, I stop and watch it again. ------------------ Houston Sports Board The Anti-Bud Adams Page
Unquestionably one of my favorite movies... Freeman is one of my favorite actors and Tim Robbins is brilliant in this as well. Like mrpaige I bought it on DVD (actually got it through Columbia House but had I played it a little smarter I would have used one of my enrollment DVDs on a more expensive disk and bought the $19.95 Shawshank Redemption as one of the commitments... but I digress ) ------------------ NOTHING BUT .NET CLUTCHCITY.NET
It is on my top ten list for sure...a great movie.... Other good prison movies... Cool Hand Luke & The Great escape. DaDakota PS. If you guys like DVD's check Half.com and look for used one's first...you can generally get them for a lot less. [This message has been edited by DaDakota (edited February 24, 2001).]
As much as I love movies, I have yet to see it. I'll be sure to include it on my next rental .. perhaps tomorrow night. ------------------ Nice guys finish last ... and im surely not going to finish last!
I'd never really thought of The Great Escape as a pure prison movie, but if we are to include such hybrids then I would suggest Stalag 17 in addition to the two aforementioned movies. ------------------ The Rockets will be the NBA champions. Believe.
Shawshank is definately in my top 5 movies. Since you guys brought up all these old prison/pow movies, check out Chicken Run. It's a great twist on the prison theme and pays homage to the greats like The Great Escape and Stalag 17 ------------------

If you haven't read the novella, here it is. http://www.engl.virginia.edu/courses/enwr101/s97/33/reading/shank.htm

Yes! Chicken Run!! I never thought that a movie with clay-animated British chickens could be so good! ------------------ "...just because a clever person can complicate the discussion about the truth doesn't necessarily mean he or she is making any progress in finding it."
What about such great quasi-prison movies as Twelve Monkeys (Bruce Willis is in prison to start the movie in prison and returns there several times) and Natural Born Killers (awesome prison escape sequence)? ------------------ In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.
Shawshank Redemption is a great movie. Captivating in every way. Morgan Freeman became one of my favorite actors after I saw this movie. "Get busy livin', or get busy dyin'... that's godd*mn right." ------------------ "all your base are belong to us!" "you have no chance to survive make your time!"
Alright guys, I'm about to go to Blockbuster to rent some of these flicks! Favorite lines from Shawshank: "I'm not gonna count to three. I'm not even gonna count to one. You will shut the f*ck up now or I'll sing you a lullaby." "I guess its only a feeling a free man can feel." "Some birds just aren't meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright" "You know what the Mexicans say about the Pacific? It has no memory. That's where I want to live the rest of my life" "I ain't supposed to be here!" "What did you say you fat barrel of monkey spunk!?" "Andy came to me in 1949 for the murder of his wife and the fellow she was banging." ------------------
I liked it a great deal, too. Thought it got stiffed at the Oscars . Morgan Freeman was absolutely terrific. That was my favorite movie for a while, until I saw Restoration. ------------------ Why is it that everytime BC defeats a major conference opponent, that opponent promptly goes on a losing streak? PS. Notre Dame sucks
At the risk of sounding boring, you should really read 'Papillion'. As good as the film is, the book is awesome. Shawshank is definitely one of the best films I've ever seen ... ------------------
Do you mean that if you really did commit the crime you were imprisoned for, you wouldn't try to escape? As for me, I wouldn't try (whether I was guilty or not). Freedom isn't too important to me. In fact, I could use more structure in my life. When does the bank close? ------------------ RealGM Rockets Draft Obligations Summary Gafford Art Artisan
