I have never been a huge fan of Galveston just due to the drive and the state of the beach, but I was running at the gym and saw something about Schlitterbahn coming to Galveston and then came home and saw this and man this looks really nice and really looks like it could be something to go a lot during the year especially with our weather year round. I have been to the one in New Braunfels and that was really nice and I think this one will be the same. And by the way there are INDOOR Sections of the park!!
    Here are some pictures…..

GALVESTON, TX – The latest water ride technology was unveiled today at the 26-acre site of the new Schlitterbahn Galveston Island Waterpark on Galveston Island. Business and community leaders were on hand to learn more about the attractions now under construction at the waterpark. They were also introduced to the park’s general manager, Ron Sutula.

Using a 40-foot-wide working scale model, Schlitterbahn Waterparks designer and owner Jeff Henry demonstrated the state-of-the-art river system that will encircle and connect 15-acres of attractions. “The idea is to maximize guests’ entertainment time in the water,” Henry explained. “We’ve created an innovative man-made river that has many of the features found in natural rivers, including eddies and rapids. Three interconnecting sections carry guests around the park and the experience is never the same twice,” he said.

Henry explained that the technology is the next evolution of the award-winning Transportainment® river system introduced at Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark on South Padre Island. Schlitterbahn Galveston Island Waterpark will also have a covered section that will allow part of the park to remain open year-round. In addition, the park will feature more than 20 attractions including body slides, tube slides and speed slides, plus a wave pool and children’s activity pool. Fans of the original Schlitterbahn Waterpark Resort in New Braunfels will find some of their favorite rides such as a bodyboarding ride, Tidal Wave River® and Master Blaster® uphill water coaster.

The indoor portion of the park will open this winter, including tube and speed slides, hot tub, children’s activity pool and a Tidal Wave River®. The rest of the park will be open by the 2006 summer season.

Industry veteran Ron Sutula will run the new park. He brings more than 25 years experience to the general manager position and has opened five new parks, including two Wet ‘n Wild waterparks. Most recently, Sutula was director of resort operations for Universal Orlando, Florida, where he was responsible for overall operation of the 840-acre facility and supervision of more than 1,200 employees.

Schlitterbahn currently operates two other waterparks in New Braunfels and South Padre Island, Texas. The flagship park in New Braunfels, which opened in 1979, features more than 40 family attractions and 218 overnight rooms. It is the most popular summertime waterpark in the United States and has been rated America’s number one waterpark by the Travel Channel.

The 26-acre Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark on South Padre Island opened in 2001 and features more than a dozen family attractions. The park features a dozen attractions that have received the industry’s top awards for water ride innovation.

Both Schlitterbahn Waterparks are now open daily. For details, go to www.schlitterbahn.com.

That will be huge. The Houston area needs an attraction other than the Galleria.

56k = Death! - should be in the thread title.

These are the type of things galveston needs to boost tourism. Water that doesn't look like coffee would be good also.
