My wife and I are going to start investing but we want either Green funds or Socially Responsible funds. We have experience with mutual funds but not really with non-traditional one's. I have seen some that perform as well as traditional funds especially considering all the new environmental technology being developed.

Anyone ever investigated this or used funds of this nature?

I haven't had much experience investing in green funds, but it's a great idea. Even if you don't realize the same returns as traditional funds (but woo hoo if you do!), you can be satisfied in the knowledge that you are not supporting anything that might conflict with your world view.

Here's a site with a ton of information and an index of mutual funds: http://www.socialinvest.org/. Click on "Mutual Fund Charts" to get a broad overview of fund performance and annual returns.

    Have fun!

Jeff: You should look at some of the work published by people like Severyn Bruyn. I know that, as of 2 years ago, Green funds actually were more profitable than the rest of the market.

Don't know if that will continue. Still, I like your style!

Why is it that everytime BC defeats a major conference opponent, that opponent promptly goes on a losing streak?

    PS. Notre Dame sucks

I owned Domini Social Equity Index (DSEFX) for about 1 or 2 years but got out of it during the tech explosion for more "lucrative" funds. Yes, I'm one of those momentum investors. I'm looking to get back into them.

I personally didn't buy it because it was "socially responsible", but rather because I think at the time it had a decent growth rate, I liked the companies it was investing in (well, the top ones anyway), I got it as a no-load fund, low 12b-1 fees, and its expense ratio was very reasonable.

I liked the fund, but I have no idea what it's been doing lately.

The performance for green funds has been pretty much on par with the S&P and other traditional mutual funds. Basically, they don't lose as much in down times but don't make quite as much during up times.

The Domini Fund has fared very well vs. traditional funds. Thanks for the info.
