Okay, so all of a sudden my PC basically doesn't have the internet anymore. Its all connected right, and I can access my router and change settings there and such, but it doesn't load any webpage or AIM, etc. So I unplug the ethernet cable from the PC and plug it into my laptop, and I have internet on here. What the hell is wrong with my PC? I know first reaction is a virus, but I just did a full scan and found nothing. Also, I didn't DL anything and this happened, just randomly out of the blue while I was gone for the morning. Any suggestions?
Your notebook is probably configured to get an IP address automatically from your router using DHCP. Your home pc may not be configured that way. Set your hom pc to get and IP address dynamically, and make sure that it's getting the address from your router (your router will be the dhcp host). also try this from a dos prompt: ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew
Things to consider: 1. You didn't change/edit the allowed pc list (based on MAC addresses) on the router did you? Did you perhaps accidentally exclude your PC? 2. Like droxford said, make sure you dynamically set your IP address through the router. 3. Another quick and dirty way to check is to disconnect the modem from the router and directly connect to your PC to see if that works. This way you can kinda source where the problem is coming from, the PC or router. If all else fails, it might be a hardware issue, so you may have to replace your Network Card, but that should be a last resort.
Ok.. 1) I reset the router. Did nothing. I still get internet through that connection on laptop, but not the PC. 2) I released/renew. As far as I could tell, everything went as it was supposed to. It recognized my ISP, gave me an ip and everything. Still, nothing. It's almost as if the cable modem isnt connected to the router, as I can access everything in the router from my PC, but not get on the internet. This would make me think there isn't a problem with my NIC card though. Ugh.. I hate computers now
Just to let you know, another way to test connectivity is a ping test. Open up command, and type "ping www.google.com", and sucessfully sending and recieving packacts is a good sign. Just out of curiosity, can you type ipconfig on the command line and post the results. Is there a way that someone in your family/household could've screwed this up while you were gone?
the fact that you are able to connect to your router indicates that it's not a problem with your NIC. Try this: configure the TCP/IP settings on your computer to be indentical to the settings on your notebook. then do a release/renew.
I would follow droxfords advice, but I have random problems like this quite often, and the thing that usually solves it for me i:- 1. Turn off PC 2. Turn off Router 3. Turn off modem 4. Wait 2 minutes 5. Turn them back on in reverse order, waiting a minute between each You may have already tried this, but if not it is worth a shot.
your router is working because you can get Internet at your laptop. Your PC's NIC and TCP/IP is working because you can talk to the router. Must be your browser. Check to see if anything funky is set in tools/Internet Options/Connections. Look under LAN settings there and make sure it's not looking for a proxy server.
Didn't see the AIM part. I don't use it, and we don't support it at work, so I don't know much about how it works (like how integrated it is with IE).
On your laptop, open up the command prompt and type ipconfig...it will display for you the IP address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway.
