I isntalled Tiger last night. The features are great. But, something is definitely up. I can hear the hard drive spinning much of the time and my computer's performance is weird. Even typing this, it paused a few times. Really annoying. Any ideas?
If it's not Spotlight, it could be some of the dashboard widgets. Especially if you "only" have 512MB of RAM. On my computer (2.0 dual G5), the default Weather widget, the Yahoo! Traffic widget, and some other widget (Translate? Wikipedia?) took up over 100 megs of physical (not virtual) memory each. Try turning them off. (You can check how much RAM they're using in whatever the Mac equivalent of Task Manager is -- I don't remember its name.)
Actually, I just figured it out. I have an external firewire drive and I heard it spinning too. I booted it down and everything started working great. It was the one thing I hadn't checked. DOH! I love Tiger, but how the hell do you get it to install new Wigets when you download them???
you should always unmount external FW drives when performing OSX updates. lot's of info over at macfixit on this.
Now, you tell me. It works great now and I figured out the Widgets thing. Maybe in the next update, they'll fix it so you can drag Widgets onto the Dashboard instead of having to put them in the /Library/Widgets folder.
